Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. The award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
- English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in written and spoken English as per 38 U.S.C. 7403(f).
- Education: Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing (ACEN or CCNE). Alternatively, individuals in a master's level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's degree may become registered with a state license prior to completing the program, with appointment on a temporary basis that can later be converted to permanent upon graduation. Foreign nursing graduates must possess a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration, with foreign education higher than an associate degree requiring formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized agency like ICD.
- Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a professional nurse in the U.S. or its territories or the District of Columbia.
- Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: Candidates meeting education requirements but lacking licensure may be appointed temporarily while pursuing licensure, with possible extensions.
- Grade Determinations: Candidates must meet specific scope, education, and experience criteria for each grade level, detailed in the online assessment linked in the original description.
Preferred Experience: 2+ years of ED or critical care nursing experience; CEN certification preferred.
Physical Requirements: Walking, bending, stooping, lifting, and periods of sitting.
Duties
- Provide urgent and emergent care to patients with various medical, surgical, and psychiatric conditions, ranging from basic care to stabilization and life support.
- Practice independently and collaboratively as a nurse, assuming roles as a direct care provider, educator, administrator, researcher, consultant, leader, and advocate.
- Offer feedback to peers, support colleagues through knowledge sharing, and foster a safe, professional environment.
- Evaluate outcomes based on evidence-based practices, responsible for documented outcomes at the program or service level.
- Assess patients, prioritize care using the five-level triage system, develop and implement care plans, and evaluate progress, adjusting as necessary.
- This position is located at William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, WI.
