Job summary

City of Suffolk is looking for a skilled Heavy Equipment Operator in the Public Works Department. You will operate refuse compactor, crash truck and dump trucks during daily pickups and debris transfers to the SPSA landfill, under supervision with safety emphasis.

Responsibilities include inspecting vehicles, performing minor maintenance, keeping equipment clean, and assisting labor crews during neighborhood cleanups and public events. On-call duties may apply during severe weather.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of operating motorized sanitation equipment.
• Awareness of safety hazards and precautions for heavy trucks.
• Ability to operate heavy trucks on assigned routes safely and legally.
• Ability to perform minor maintenance on heavy equipment.
• Ability to follow oral instructions and work with the public.

Responsibilities

• Inspect compactor and other trucks; ensure readiness for daily pickup.
• Picks up large refuse and assists with neighborhood cleanups.
• Call dispatch when piles are too large and report damage.
• Maintain cleanliness of trucks and report breakdowns for repair.
• Follow safety procedures; avoid accidents and violations.
• May assist other crews and handle on-call duties during severe weather.
