Town of Herndon is seeking a Utility Equipment Operator II (Truck Driver) to operate refuse, recycling and yard waste collection vehicles. You will load materials, haul to processing facilities and help maintain equipment.

This role requires a high school diploma or GED and a valid Class B CDL with air brake endorsement; you must pass safety inspections and may train new staff. The position is essential personnel for weather events.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

UTILITY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR II (TRUCK DRIVER)

The purpose of this position is to operate various refuse trucks for the collection of curbside, residential trash, recyclables and yard waste. Employees in this classification perform skilled work in the operation of heavy, motorized equipment, and operating a dump truck, brush truck, refuse truck, roll-off truck, and/or an automated or rear-load collection vehicle; position is responsible for loading refuse or other maintenance materials into appropriate truck; hauling materials to appropriate processing facility, preparing and maintaining records of work status; and performing general maintenance on equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Drives vehicles for the collection of town refuse, recycling and yard waste; loads refuse and other materials into appropriate truck; travels to landfills for disposal; issues violation notices; collects roadside trash; collects special pickups as needed.
  2. Conducts daily maintenance and safety inspections of vehicles and equipment; may perform minor repairs as needed.
  3. Assists with town special events and weather emergency situations.
  4. Follows all town and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) safety requirements.
  5. May assist in training new or temporary personnel in this position

Position is considered “essential personnel”; defined as staff who are required to report to their designated work location during weather-related or other emergencies, even when town offices are closed or normal operations are suspended.

Requirement
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Solid waste collection experience strongly preferred
  • Valid Class B Commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement and acceptable record.
  • Must be able to obtain both VDOT flagger certification and forklift operator license within six months of employment with the town.

Duties involve the ability to exert heavy, physical effort, and involves some lifting, carrying, pushing, climbing, crouching, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crawling up to approximately 100 pounds. Duties may also require coordinated movements to operate different types of equipment and vehicles. Duties may also require adequate visual perception, as well as adequate oral communications abilities.

Duties may risk exposure to adverse, environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, animal pests, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, loud machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, violence, disease and pathogenic substances.
