Job summary

The City of Suffolk is seeking a sanitation worker to support the Public Works Department in routine refuse collection tasks. You will load, dump, and compact garbage, operate hydraulic controls, and help with leaf vacuum work while maintaining trucks and equipment.

Expect to work outdoors in varying weather conditions; routine checks of equipment; respond to public inquiries and assist in related duties as needed.

Qualifications

• Ability to perform very heavy physical work.
• Must possess a valid driver''s license.
• Ability to work in inclement weather.
• Ability to follow instructions.
• Ability to communicate in Standard English.

Responsibilities

• Loads refuse receptacles onto the truck and dumps contents.
• Operates hydraulic controls to compact garbage in the truck.
• Inspects truck at the start of each shift for proper operation.
• Fuels and washes refuse collection vehicles; maintains trucks.
• Assists leaf vacuum and boom truck operators as needed.
• Responds to inclement weather and emergencies as on‑call.
• Communicates with coworkers via two‑way radio.
• Answers public inquiries about refuse collection.
• Keeps truck clean and greased; collects animal carcasses along roadways.
• Performs other related duties as required.
