Job summary

Tri-County Human Services seeks a Peer Specialist to provide direct input from a consumer perspective, supporting recovery and coping skills. You will serve as a role model and help with individualized case management and linkages to medical, community, and specialty services.

The position emphasizes dignity, respect, and cultural sensitivity while engaging with individuals to promote recovery and hope within the service system.

Qualifications

• Requires a high school diploma or GED and at least one year of full-time experience in a mental health or addictions treatment setting.
• Certification as a Certified Peer Specialist by the Florida Certification Board within one year of starting.
• Knowledge of addictions treatment and/or mental health treatment programs and supportive services.
• Understanding of causes, nature and treatment of substance abuse and mental health problems.
• Must pass a level 2 background screening.

Responsibilities

• Attends and participates in community forms dealing with substance abuse and mental health issues and concerns.
• Speaks to individuals regarding services received and provides feedback to both the department and providers.
• Assist providers in developing role recovery objectives that meet individual progress towards their goals.
• Discuss with individuals areas within the provider's service delivery that need improvement.
• Engage individuals to talk about their experiences to promote understanding of life experiences and their effects on functioning and to promote hope for recovery.
• Develop rapport with persons involved in the criminal justice system and those with addiction or mental health issues.
• Assists with enrollment for services provided by community behavioral health providers.
• Help staff identify program environments conducive to recovery; lend insights into mental illness and recovery.
• Assist in peer group support using Illness Management and Recovery model to facilitate problem solving and personal growth.
• Maintain a personal recovery plan with strengths, needs, abilities, goals and progress.
