Job description

Our client is a national real estate investment firm involved in all phases of real estate management, development, and leasing. The company’s properties are located throughout the continental United States and include shopping centers, office buildings, and other commercial real estate.

Position Overview:

The Controller is a key member of our accounting team, reporting directly to the CFO. The Controller will be responsible for maintaining the general ledger, producing high quality financial reports and for ensuring the Company adheres to all governmental and non-governmental reporting deadlines. In addition, the controller will be responsible for management of Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable. The ideal candidate is a highly entrepreneurial and self-motivated person who is very attentive to detail and demonstrates a flexible and adaptable work style that responds quickly and efficiently under tight deadlines.

Responsibilities:

  • Review the General Ledger, process journal entries and make all adjustments to the financial statements.
  • Manage and perform the month-end accounting close process including timely preparation of financial reporting packages.
  • Prepare monthly fees and charges to managed properties.
  • Prepare work papers and work with independent auditors in connection with interim and annual audits.
  • Review detailed monthly, quarterly and year end work paper packages prepared by junior accountants.
  • Manage Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable.
  • Prepare annual and quarterly financial statements for public OTC filing.
  • Work with CFO to produce the annual budget for the Company and review property budgets.
  • Compile and review analysis of detailed budget variance reports for income, expense, capital expenditures, leasing costs, NOI and cash flows.
  • Prepare work papers for monthly/quarterly sales tax filings.
  • Authorize disbursements, including electronic banking transmittals (ACH’s, wires, electronic book transfer, stop payments and opening and closing of bank accounts).
  • Account reconciliation, bank reconciliations, ad-hoc reporting, analysis and miscellaneous projects.
  • Liaise with outside Joint Venture Partners in collecting and analyzing financial information on a timely basis on jointly owned properties.
  • Ability to work to deadlines and attend to other job-related requests as required.
  • Identify and manage opportunities for process improvement and efficiency.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting from an accredited college or university
  • 8+ years of real estate industry experience, CPA preferred
  • Public accounting experience preferred
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP/accounting theory
  • Aptitude for problem solving and high attention to detail
  • Ability to think independently as well as work in a team environment
  • Proficiency in Excel and familiarity with all Microsoft Office Suite Applications
  • Strong background in MRI accounting software
  • Avid, Juniper Square, and Spreadsheet Server experience a plus
  • Partnership and Corporate Tax background a plus
