Job summary

Sylvania is seeking a Certified Reading Interventionist for Dolton West School District 148 to provide targeted reading instruction for students K–8 performing below grade level. This role involves collaboration with teachers to design interventions and monitor literacy progress.

The ideal candidate will hold a Bachelor's degree in Education and preferably a Master's in Reading, with a commitment to improving student literacy. Teachers are expected to assess reading levels, implement instructional strategies, and maintain communication with families.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years teaching experience in reading instruction.
  • Valid teaching license with Reading Specialist endorsement preferred.
  • Experience analyzing data to support reading instruction.

Responsibilities

DOLTON WEST SCHOOL DISTRICT 148 Reading Interventionist

Position Classification: Certified Reading Interventionist

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Reading Interventionist provides targeted reading instruction and support to students in grades K–8 who are identified as performing below grade level in reading. The interventionist collaborates with classroom teachers, administrators, and support staff to design and implement evidence-based reading interventions, monitor student progress, and promote literacy achievement for all learners.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, the Reading Interventionist must be able to perform essential duties satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. This includes a high level of proficiency in written and oral communication skills. The position requires:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Education required; Master's degree in Reading, Literacy, or a related field preferred.
  • Certification: Valid teaching license; Reading Specialist endorsement or certification preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years teaching experience, with demonstrated success in reading instruction and intervention.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Deep understanding of the science of reading and developmentally appropriate literacy instruction.
  • Strong knowledge of reading assessments and data analysis.
  • Ability to differentiate instruction and adjust teaching methods to meet diverse learning needs.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with current literacy programs and instructional technologies.

Working Conditions:

  • 10-month position
  • Travel between schools required
  • Occasional evening Superintendent, Board of Education and/or Community presentations
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide small group and individualized reading instruction aligned to students' specific needs.
  • Assess students using formal and informal measures to determine reading levels, strengths, and areas of need.
  • Analyze data to identify students for intervention and monitor ongoing progress.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to develop and adjust intervention plans.
  • Implement research-based strategies in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
  • Support classroom instruction through modeling and co-teaching literacy strategies.
  • Participate in the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) process.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records of student performance and progress.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians regarding student progress and strategies for home support.
  • Attend professional development sessions to remain current in literacy instruction and intervention strategies.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of schoolwide literacy initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Curriculum for Reading/ELA and/or Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction.

Salary/Benefits: In alignment with the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The District offers fringe benefits, including life, medical, dental and vision insurance.

Reports To: Director of Curriculum for Reading/ELA and Social Studies and/or Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction.
