Job description

POSITION: Reading Interventionist

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Approved Certified Compensation Plan

CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

REPORTS TO: Principals, Director of Teaching and Learning & Director of Curriculum and Instruction

Essential Functions
  • Provides direct instruction to students identified as eligible for reading services in individual, small group, and/or full classroom settings.
  • Uses identified needs to guide the learning process toward student achievement of district’s reading/language arts content standards.
  • Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units and projects using formal and informal assessment data obtained from students.
  • Uses a variety of instructional techniques and literacy materials consistent with reading/language arts content standards and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
  • Creates a classroom environment and research-based program of study that are conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Provides written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, administrative guidelines, or specific program requirements.
  • Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and, for the classroom, develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
  • Make provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  • Conducts or participates in needed parent conferences and telephone conferences.
  • Conducts student assessments to identify those eligible for intervention services, to plan instruction, and/or to assist staff members in learning various assessment techniques.
  • Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provide progress reports as required.
  • Collaborates, as needed, with appropriate district personnel regarding students who may need specialized interventions.
  • Provides consultant/collaborative services to classroom teachers, model “best” instructional practices, and team teach as appropriate to support individuals or groups of students in learning or transferring effective strategies.
  • Strives to maintain and improve professional competence through professional development activities.
  • Coordinates with principal in planning and implementing professional development activities to address school improvement.
  • Helps locate, order, and promote materials to improve reading instruction.
  • Participates in discussions or activities focused on using research to improve reading/language arts teaching.
  • Attends meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or his/her designee.
Mental Tasks

Read, communicate, comprehend, calculate and compute. Analyzes and evaluates information to be processed. Compose written information. Researches project information.

Physical Requirements

Work involves the performance of duties where physical exertion is not normally required to perform all aspects of the job. Assistance is available as required to perform physically demanding tasks. Work involves sitting for extended periods of time, requires moving from one location to another, reaching, stooping, bending, and holding and grasping objects. Visual weakness must not prohibit the performance of assigned duties. Verbal communicative ability may be required of public contact positions.

Qualifications

  • Extensive training in the implementation of research based programs
  • Ability to evaluate programs and report on data
  • Ability to meet multiple deadlines and to plan and coordinate the work of multiple groups of people
  • Relentless drive to attain results: proven experience and effectiveness in improving student achievement in the classroom and/or school
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
