Job summary

The City of New York’s Department of Parks & Recreation seeks an Associate Urban Park Ranger in Brooklyn. You will supervise staff, plan and lead fee-based and free programs, enforce rules, and coordinate schedules while ensuring safety and quality service to the public.

You’ll communicate directives to staff, maintain records, train personnel, apply wildlife policy, and represent the agency at community meetings. Residency rules apply; a civil service list may affect movement.

Qualifications

• A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or equivalent.
• Associate degree with 1 year of relevant experience or 60 credits.
• High school diploma with 2 years of related experience.
• Equivalent combination of education and experience accepted.

*This vacancy is only open to current permanent Parks employees serving in the Urban Park Ranger civil service title or on leave from the title.

The Urban Park Rangers’ (UPR) mission is to link New Yorkers to the natural world through environmental education, outdoor recreation, wildlife management and active conservation.

Major Responsibilities

• Under direction, supervise subordinates in planning, coordinating, booking and leading all fee-based and free programs, events and activities, and in enforcing compliance with departmental rules and regulations through the issuance of summonses. Direct and review staff, programs and operations providing informational, educational and safety services to the general public.
• Communicate agency/senior management directives to staff. Ensure compliance with uniform standards, standards of conduct and time and leave procedures.
• Create weekly and biweekly project schedules for staff and hold regularly scheduled staff meetings to disseminate pertinent information.
• Create and maintain accurate files relating to programs, supplies, equipment, time and leave usage and scheduling.
• Train new and existing staff. Evaluate performance and provide constructive criticism and suggestions for improvement.
• Understand and implement wildlife policy.
• Attend Agency meetings appropriate to assignment. Serve as Agency and city representative at community board and related neighborhood group meetings. Work closely with other city, state and federal agencies to enforce parks rules and regulations. Plan and execute programs and special events; delegate tasks and assignments to ensure the events are successful.
• Oversee special projects such as grant research, wildlife management programs and enforcement initiatives.
• Ensure proper maintenance of assigned Parks vehicles, facilities and grounds.

Fees: Hired candidates will be subject to a processing fee between $40.00 to $101.00 based on the salary range of title. Hired candidates who are not currently employed by the City will be subject to a $104.50 background check fee.

ASSOCIATE URBAN PARK RANGER - 60422

Minimum Qualifications

• 1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college; or
• 2. An associate degree or completion of 60 credits from an accredited college and one year of full-time paid experience in one of the following: law or code enforcement; security; ecology; or as an environmental instructor or ranger in a recognized park, recreation or ranger program, cultural institution, or accredited school; or
• 3. A four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and two years of fulltime experience as described in "2" above; or
• 4. A satisfactory combination of education and experience that is equivalent to "1", "2", or "3" above. College education may be substituted for the required experience in "2" or "3" above on the basis of 5 semester credits for 1 month of experience.

Residency Requirement

Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam or Westchester counties required for employees with over two years of city service. New York City residency required within 90 days of hire for all other candidates.
