Job summary

NYC Parks is seeking a Community Coordinator to support forestry programs and operations. The role involves coordinating administrative tasks, preparing reports, and serving as a liaison among internal teams and external partners within the Department of Parks & Recreation.

The candidate will collect and disseminate data, assist on projects like Trees Count, and help standardize information flows across budgets, procurement, staffing, and facilities.

Qualifications

  • 1) A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities related to the duties.
  • 2) High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or related activities.
  • 3) Education/experience equivalent to (1) or (2) with at least one year in described duties.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain reports, trackers and presentations as directed.

Job description

NYC Parks’ mission is to grow, maintain, and program a world-class park system prioritizing equity, access, safety, and nature. Forestry and Horticulture aims to protect, restore, care for, and expand New York City Parks, nature and tree canopy to maximize environmental health, community well-being and resilience.

Major Responsibilities
  • Under the supervision of the Chief of Forestry Operations or Chief of Forestry Programs, with latitude for independent initiative and judgment, coordinate administrative aspects of Parks Forestry operations, standardization and strategic planning.
  • Prepare, update, and maintain reports, trackers and presentations as directed.
  • Serve as a liaison among teams within the division, the Agency and externally.
  • Assist in the management of special projects, such as NYC Parks Trees Count and wood reuse.
  • Assist with implementation of policies and procedures to standardize and streamline information flows and data management to support Forestry programs and operations.
  • Collect, organize, maintain, analyze, and disseminate data and information relevant to Forestry assets and workflows; manage and maintain metadata and other technical documentation.
  • Collect, organize, and disseminate information relating to budgets, contract management, procurement, staffing, equipment, vehicles and facilities.
  • Perform general clerical duties including, but not limited to, scheduling meetings, taking notes, reporting out, following up, processing correspondence, answering phones, copying, mailing and updating different databases.
  • Create and collect surveys to gather staff input.
  • Assist with setting up and coordinating staff training and events as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.

Preferred Skills

1. Experience with Parks Forestry operations, government relations, intra - and inter-agency coordination and related fields.2. Fluency in computer software including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access.3. Knowledge of Parks’ Forestry Management System (ForMS).4. Excellent interpersonal, customer service and organizational skills.

Residency Requirement

Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam or Westchester counties required for employees with over two years of city service. New York City residency required within 90 days of hire for all other candidates.
