Job summary

MBTA is seeking a Superintendent of Training – Rail Maintenance to lead the design and delivery of comprehensive safety and technical training for Rail Maintenance teams in the Boston area.

The role focuses on curriculum development, program effectiveness, and collaboration with engineers, vendors, and educational institutions to keep procedures current with industry standards and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related field.
• Six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in vehicle, rail vehicle, transit vehicle, or heavy‑duty fleet repair and/or maintenance.
• Demonstrated supervisory experience overseeing maintenance, technical, or operational personnel.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, database applications, PeopleSoft, or similar business systems.
• Strong organizational, analytical, quantitative, multi‑tasking, and time‑management skills.
• Excellent customer service, presentation, communication, and conflict‑resolution skills.
• Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information professionally.
• Ability to supervise, lead, and work with a diverse workforce.
• Ability to respond to emergencies 24/7.

Responsibilities

• Supervise training facilities and ensure instructional materials, equipment, and testing resources are properly organized, maintained, and available.
• Analyze the effectiveness of training programs and implement updates, revisions, or corrective actions as needed.
• Develop and implement training modules to support vehicle innovations, modifications, system upgrades, and new procurement.
• Maintain current training methods and industry best practices through ongoing collaboration with educational institutions, vendors, and industry resources.
• Develop, maintain, and monitor a comprehensive training tracking matrix for qualifications, certifications, and regulatory requirements.
• Plan, coordinate, and schedule training programs with carhouse superintendents, supervisors, forepersons, and other stakeholders.
• Deliver classroom, practical, and hands‑on technical training as required.
• Review work rules and processes to improve efficiency, effectiveness, and workforce readiness.
