Job summary

Complete Genomics Incorporated in San Jose, CA is seeking a Systems R&D Engineer to help develop, integrate, test, and improve next-generation sequencing and multi-omics technologies. You will collaborate with systems, software, and hardware engineers across bioengineering, optics, fluidics, electronics, automation, and data analysis.

This early-career role emphasizes hands-on problem solving, breadth across bioengineering, optics, and software, with collaboration across the U.S.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related technical field.
• Master’s degree or PhD is a plus, but not required.
• 0–2 years of relevant engineering experience encouraged.
• Exposure to bioengineering, genomics, or life sciences.
• Hands-on experience across instrumentation, motion control, electronics, fluidics, optics, imaging, lasers, robotics, automation, or thermal systems.
• Experience with Python for data analysis, automation, or quantitative analysis.

Responsibilities

• Build, integrate, and test prototypes, breadboards, fixtures, instruments, and experimental setups involving hardware, software, and biological systems.
• Design experiments to characterize system performance, troubleshoot problems, identify root causes, and propose improvements.
• Gain hands-on experience with optics/imaging, lasers/cameras, fluidics/microfluidics, motion control, electronics, thermal control, automation, and biological assays.
• Use Python and other tools to collect and analyze data, identify trends, and support technical decisions.
• Investigate interactions among biochemistry, proteins, biological assays, flow cells, instrumentation, and data.
• Contribute ideas and work toward improving existing systems and developing proof-of-concept technologies for future sequencing and multi-omics platforms.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams in the U.S. and internationally; document methods/results in reports and design reviews.
