Job summary

The City of Lynchburg, Virginia is seeking a Training Coordinator within the Public Works Department to develop, facilitate and oversee department-wide equipment, tools, job tasks and emergency training programs. You will assess training needs, design and implement programs, track licenses and certifications, coordinate CDL training with contractors, and ensure compliance with safety regulations.

  • Prepare training requests for proposals and work with Risk Management and HR to enforce policies.
  • Respond to Public Works emergencies and assist with safety investigations.

Job description

Develop, facilitate and oversee Department‑wide equipment, tools, job task and emergency training programs for the assigned Department of Public Works. Assess training needs; design develop and implement training programs to enhance or develop the required skills.

Compensation negotiable based on qualifications.

Leads/performs department‑wide equipment, tools, job task and emergency‑related training; oversees specialized technical training program for maintenance crews which includes roadway, roadside, bridge, landscaping, park maintenance, and other public works‑related job duties and tasks, etc;

  • Works with the Operations Support Manager, SafetySpecialistand leadership to assess, create, develop,implementand promote training programs andinitiatives;
  • Trains employees on equipment safety and operation;
  • Coordinatesand managestheCommercial Driver’s Licensetraining program with the City’s contractor, staff,supervisorsand managers to include WaterResources;
  • Tracks employee licenses, endorsements, certifications, andtraining;
  • Researches andmonitorsregulatory requirements that apply to employees and the work of thedepartment;
  • Collaborates with department managers, Safety Specialist and other City departments to prepare training requests for proposals;
  • Provides required safety training to newly hired employees:
  • Assistswith obtaining and issuingPPE;
  • Collaborates withdepartment staff, Risk Management and Human Resources, to incorporate federal, state and City policy and other rules and regulations into the development oftraining;
  • Maintains confidentiality of all personnel,accountingand financerecords;
  • Performs site visits and training program reviews with similar external agencies and vendors tomaintaincurrent industry standard training related to City owned tools andequipment;
  • Assists with investigation ofemployeeaccidents,injuriesand safetytraining;
  • Required to respond to Public Works Emergencies in theappropriate capacity.
  • Assists with following up on vehicle maintenance schedules.
Additional Duties
  • Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to the citizens may be assigned.
  • When unusual situations occur and/or the City Manager declares a State of Emergency, all City employees may be required to accept special assignments and perform as needed to ensure appropriate service delivery.

Six years of construction, Public Works, industrial plant and/or maintenance experience; AND two (2) years of experience developing, coordinating, and facilitating training; OR, any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities. Experienced in safety training and industry standards.

  • A valid Virginia State Driver's License is required with an approved driving record based on the City of Lynchburg's driving criteria

  • A valid State of Virginia Traffic Flagging Card or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.

  • A valid First Aid Card and CPR card are required or ability to obtain within 1 year of employment.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. The employee must have the ability to speak effectively before employees, students, and organizations.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals is needed to maintain student academic rankings in the various classes. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and averages.

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS

Ability to communicate effectively with students, instructors, and staff.
