Job description

This position may be filled as a Maintenance Worker II or Maintenance Worker III depending on the selected candidate's qualifications. Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity:

• Maintenance Worker II: preferred hiring range is $19.51 to $21.62 an hour ($40,580.80 - $44,969.60 Annually).
• Maintenance Worker III: preferred hiring range is $20.86 to $25.65 an hour ($43,388.80 - $53,352.00 Annually).

The Maintenance Worker II performs routine semi-skilled work in a variety of construction, repair and maintenance assignments involving the use of common tools and operates equipment in connection with the semi-skilled tasks to which assigned; does related work as required. Primarily and most frequently the work done here is under general supervision, with related functional areas and more advanced applications.

Assignment

This position will fill one of the following assignments based on operational and department need (work schedules cited below are subject to change):

• Sidewalks Crew: Typical work schedule is Tuesday - Friday : 6:30 AM - 5:00 PM - Under the direction of a Maintenance Crew Supervisor, the selected candidate will assist in performing semi-skilled labor in the installation, maintenance and repair of sidewalks and related infrastructure.
• Concrete Crew: Typical work schedule is Monday - Friday : 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM - This position is part of a dedicated Concrete Crew responsible for supporting Capital Improvement Projects related to sidewalk repair and construction throughout the City. Under the direction of a Maintenance Crew Supervisor, the selected candidate will assist in performing semi-skilled labor in the installation, maintenance and repair of sidewalks and related infrastructure.
• Street Marking/Asphalt Crew: Typical work schedule is Monday - Thursday : 6:30 AM - 5:00 PM - Under the direction of a Maintenance Crew Supervisor, the selected candidate will assist in performing semi-skilled labor in the maintenance and repair of City streets to include repairing potholes, utility cuts and street marking.
• Refuse Collection & Disposal Crew: Typical work schedule is Tuesday – Friday : 6:30 AM – 5:00 PM - Under the direction of the Refuse Maintenance Crew Supervisor, the selected candidate will assist in the collection and disposal of solid waste throughout the City.

As of March 28, 2024, this position is part of the Labor and Trades bargaining unit. Future wage adjustments are subject to terms and conditions of the collective bargaining agreement between the City and the exclusive bargaining representative. Education and Experience:

Candidates may qualify by demonstrating the required knowledge and skills outlined for the job through experience(s) other than formal education.

• High school diploma or GED AND general knowledge of maintenance, construction, and repair work including knowledge of mechanical/automotive equipment.
• One (1) year of work experience in general maintenance, construction, and repair work including knowledge of mechanical/automotive equipment.
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above.

Certifications/Licenses/Other Requirements:

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Subject to emergency and stand-by call and must respond within minimum response time to City facility based on Departmental guidelines. (For Utilities 40-minute response time)
• Required to successfully pass a pre-employment background check, physical and drug test.
• May require a valid Virginia driver’s license and acceptable driving record according to city criteria.
• May require ability to obtain a Class A CDL with Tanker endorsement.
• May require ability to obtain Work Zone Traffic Control (WZTC) Safety-Basic level certification.
• May be subject to DOT drug and alcohol testing regulations.
