Job summary

The City of Hopewell is seeking a capable maintenance worker to perform intermediate skilled trades across streets, water and sewer lines, buildings, and grounds. You will operate dump trucks, backhoes, loaders, and other equipment under moderate supervision.

Responsibilities include road repairs, signage, drainage work, basic carpentry, plumbing, and electrical tasks, plus on-call duties. A high school diploma or GED is required, with CDL and safety certifications pursued within six months.

Qualifications

  • Experience with general construction, maintenance and/or grounds keeping preferred.

  • Perform street and sidewalk maintenance, patching, and drainage work.
  • Repair and construct concrete, signage, curbs, and drainage structures.
  • Maintain records and reports of activities; respond to on-call emergencies.
  • Assist with event setups and maintenance tasks as assigned.

Job description

Performs intermediate skilled trades work on a variety of tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, water and sewer lines, buildings and related facilities, grounds, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under moderate supervision.

  • Operates dump trucks, back hoe, front end loader, chainsaw, jackhammer, asphalt roller, weed eater, stump grinder, etc. in the construction, maintenance, and repair of public facilities.
  • Performs a variety of skilled tasks in maintaining and repairing streets, sidewalks, curbs, and gutters; spreads asphalt and patches holes in street surfaces; digs trenches and ditches.
  • Removes damaged section of pavement; fills holes with patching materials and tamps or rolls patches.
  • Constructs, maintains, and repairs manholes, catch basins, curbs, retaining walls, and drainage lines; builds and sets forms and finishes concrete; patches new and old concrete work.
  • Clears roadsides of snow, litter, overgrown grass, and brush; performs ditch cleaning and grading to ensure proper drainage; maintains gravel alleyways.
  • Operates a street sweeper and other related equipment and tools to sweep streets, gutters, medians, etc.
  • Performs minor repairs and maintenance to assigned equipment.
  • Performs a variety of minor building maintenance tasks such as carpentry, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical work; makes minor repairs and alterations.
  • Performs a variety of tasks in the maintenance and operation of cemetery; marks and sells plots.
  • Sets up for various events; sets up tents, tables and chairs; puts up and removes decorations and barricades; cleans up and restores area after events; assists with office moves.
  • Fabricates, installs, and removes street signs; conducts street sign inspections; sets up and removes traffic control devices.
  • Maintains, lays out and installs painted and thermoplastic pavement markings and symbols.
  • Performs work in the Convenience Center; operates and adjusts gas extraction system, monitors system performance and measures landfill gas levels.
  • Picks up refuse, trash, limbs, leaves, etc., and transports to appropriate facilities.
  • Maintains a variety of records and reports on activities; logs daily reports.
  • May be required to work outside normal work hours in on-call and emergency situations.
  • Serves as backup to other crew(s) as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or GED and minimal experience in general construction, maintenance, and/or grounds keeping work, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses and/or Certifications:
  • Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • May require possession of or ability to obtain specific licenses and/or certifications depending on departmental assignment.
  • Obtain commercial driver's license within six months of hire.
  • Obtain CPR, AED, and VDOT Flagger certifications within six months of hire.
Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, capabilities, and limitations of equipment used in area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and proper safety precautions involved in the operation of equipment.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation.
  • Knowledge of streets drainage, buildings, utilities, maintenance and repair procedures.
Skills:
  • Skill in the operation of equipment to which assigned.
  • Effective communication skills.
Abilities:
  • Understand and follow specific oral and written instructions.
  • Detect signs of mechanical failure of equipment.
  • Make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
  • Perform manual labor for extended periods often under unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
Work Environment:
  • Worker is exposed to outdoor weather conditions, traffic conditions, extreme temperatures, noise, odors, heights, dust and to hazardous materials.
Essential Physical Activities:
  • Stooping, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, repetitive motions, depth perception.
