Job summary

City of Alexandria, VA is seeking a Public Works Superintendent for the Capital Paving Program. The role leads a skilled team, shaping a strategic vision for the department and coordinating infrastructure projects aligned with City priorities on roadways and maintenance.

The essential position requires emergency responsiveness, strong project management, and collaboration with other departments, state agencies, and contractors.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED supplemented by construction trade school courses and/or equivalent experience.
• Driver’s license required; ability to perform inspections and supervise others; strong written and oral communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Perform technical condition assessments of public infrastructure assets and oversee major street resurfacing initiatives.
• Supervises, coordinates, and reviews work plans; assigns tasks; monitors workflow; ensures safety and quality.
• Oversees contractors and grants administration; maintains PCI model and multi-year resurfacing schedule.
• Provides construction management and field inspection; manages schedules, budgets, and progress payments.
• Prepares maintenance reports; procures materials and bids as necessary.
• Collaborates with other departments to align department goals with City priorities.
• Builds positive relationships with coworkers and the public; responds during emergencies.
