Job summary

City of Alexandria is seeking a Public Works Superintendent to provide leadership, develop strategic vision for the Department, and foster a collaborative, professional, and safe environment across experienced Public Works teams. The role will oversee street resurfacing, manage grants with VDOT and other agencies, and provide construction management and reporting.

The incumbent will coordinate with City departments to align goals, lead during emergencies, and maintain public safety and service

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED with construction trade school courses.
• 3+ years of experience in street construction or sewer construction/repair.
• Valid driver’s license; ability to work in adverse weather and communicate clearly.

Responsibilities

• Perform technical condition assessments of public infrastructure and oversee major street resurfacing; prepare cost estimates.
• Supervise maintenance work plans; assign work, monitor progress, and evaluate methods.
• Oversee contractors for paving and sidewalk maintenance; secure grants and coordinate with VDOT and other agencies.
• Provide construction management and field inspection to ensure plans/specifications; manage schedules and budgets.
• Prepare reports, estimates, and bids; obtain prices and issue purchase orders.
• Coordinate with other departments to align Public Works goals with City objectives.
• Build positive relationships with coworkers and the public using good customer service.
• Lead during emergencies, assess risks, and implement decisive safety solutions.
• Elevate workplace excellence by training and driving improvements in work quality and satisfaction.
