Job summary

AGSL invites applications for a librarian to oversee reference services and lead instructional programming in support of cartographic and archival collections. The role entails directing training, supervising student staff, and collaborating with campus units to enhance public services.

The position emphasizes outreach, exhibits, and the use of primary source materials for diverse audiences, with a focus on geographic resources and foreign language materials.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in library science from an ALA accredited school by date of employment.
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in geography, history, or related area.
• Training/experience in special collections and rare and modern cartographic collections.
• Evidence of experience in an academic or research library.
• Demonstrated success working collaboratively with faculty to plan and teach library instruction involving primary source materials.
• Experience supervising the day-to-day work of student employees.
• Experience creating physical and virtual exhibits.
• Familiarity with resource description, metadata standards, and schemas for cartographic, rare book, and archival collections.
• Evidence of experience working with foreign language materials.
• Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Commitment to public services and strong interpersonal skills for assisting users from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds.
• Ability to manage projects effectively and independently, with strong organizational, administrative, and time management skills.
• Demonstrated understanding of geographic concepts and cartographic resources.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the AGSL’s reference services
• Develop and deliver innovative instructional programming
• Provide timely and accurate reference and research assistance
• Support research and use of AGSL collections by local and worldwide scholarly and non-scholarly audiences
• Promote collections and services through physical and digital exhibits, presentations, and public programs
• Develop and coordinate specialized projects, programs, procedures, and services
• Oversee day-to-day functions of reference, instruction, and outreach programs
• Direct training and supervise student Reference Interns and student workers
• Serve as a resource to librarians and staff outside the unit
• Modify policies, procedures, and assessment tools to improve public services experiences
• Serve as liaison to academic disciplines and campus units regarding collections, instructional and research support, and library services
• Serve on campus, local, state, and national librarianship committees
• Conduct outreach for the collection
• Cultivate relationships with donors, collectors, vendors, and professional colleagues
• Develop, curate, and manage collections
