Position Summary
Provides services as a Public Safety Officer within BMC Department of Public Safety to deliver police, security, parking, transportation, and control center services as required. Ensures consistent and safe service delivery throughout the medical center and supports the organization’s core values and mission. Position: Public Safety Officer. Department: Public Safety. Essential Responsibilities / Duties
- Respond immediately to all stat requests, emergency, contingency, or disaster situations issued by the Public Safety Desk Officer.
- Respond promptly to all calls assigned by the Public Safety Desk Officer and document all incidents.
- Complete incident reports objectively, legibly, and submit them with supporting documentation prior to shift end.
- Utilize strong customer service skills and community policing philosophies to build relationships with the community.
- Manage complex, dynamic, and emotionally charged situations to restore order, investigate suspected or criminal activity, and take appropriate safety, security, or police actions.
- Investigate reports of suspicious activity, hazards, or risk and take steps to mitigate risk to patients, visitors, and staff.
- Investigate reports of larceny, burglary, threats, assault, and conduct evidence preservation, witness and victim interviews, suspect interrogations, and documentation.
- Use de-escalation techniques for disorderly, disruptive, or emotionally charged individuals; apply physical force when necessary and appropriate to contain, restrain, or arrest threats.
- Provide escorts to patients, visitors, employees, staff, and students to ensure safety per BMC policies.
- Provide cash transfer escorts throughout BMC upon request.
- Patrol BMC property and grounds, documenting deficiencies and violations of policy.
- Ensure authorized vehicles have access to parking areas and document violations; enforce parking policy.
- Perform all duties of a Special Police Officer in accordance with procedures.
- Provide access control to ensure compliance with policies and procedures; enforce ID, age, and vendor restrictions; inspect outbound materials; restrict access to non-authorized individuals.
- Provide information to patients, visitors, employees, staff, and students upon request in a friendly, courteous manner.
Public Safety Desk Officer Responsibilities
- Coordinate all activities of Public Safety, Parking, and Transportation Services during non-business hours; act as liaison to internal departments and external agencies.
- Coordinate post assignments of scheduled staff equitably.
- Prioritize and assign incident responses; ensure timely resolution.
- Maintain chain of custody for property, evidence, and equipment at the main desk.
- Document all actions, incidents, and supporting documentation from responding officers.
- Monitor electronic security systems in accordance with department policies.
- Page Supervisor when additional resources or for system failures.
Requirements
- High School Diploma required; Associate degree in Criminal Justice or equivalent preferred.
- CPR certification required.
- Valid Massachusetts driver’s license and ability to operate a motor vehicle.
- 6 months to 1 year preferred experience in security and customer service.
- Knowledge and skills detailed in responsibilities and duties.
Compensation and Benefits
- Base salary range: $27.77-$28.32 per hour.
