Job summary

University of Missouri-Kansas City is seeking a Safety Communications Operator for the UMKC Police Department. You will manage critical information flow, coordinate responses, and support officer safety in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities include handling 911 and non-emergency calls, dispatching officers and units, monitoring alarms and cameras, and maintaining CAD logs with public-safety systems. Shift work includes days, evenings, and nights.

Qualifications

• Minimum high school diploma and 2 years of related experience or equivalent.
• Proficiency with computers, Microsoft Office and Outlook.
• Experience in dispatch, communications or public-safety environments.
• Ability to work varying shifts including nights, weekends and holidays.

Responsibilities

• Answer and manage multi-line phone systems including 911 and administrative lines and transfer calls as needed.
• Gather accurate information, assess urgency, and prioritize requests for service.
• Serve as after-hours emergency switchboard and route urgent notifications.
• Operate multi-channel police radio systems to dispatch personnel and support units.
• Track officer status and safety through monitoring and documentation.
• Monitor alarms, access alerts, and campus camera feeds; coordinate immediate responses.
• Maintain real-time CAD logs and use public-safety systems to enter and verify data.
• Provide professional customer service to students, faculty, staff and visitors.
• Assist with training new Communications Operators and other duties as assigned.
