Job summary

University of Kansas Medical Center’s Public Safety Communications Division seeks a Communications Specialist for a fast-paced, 24/7 operation. You will handle emergency and non-emergency calls, monitor CCTV and alarm systems, and dispatch police and security resources to incidents.

Candidates must have a High School Diploma or GED, a valid KS/MO driver’s license, pass background checks and testing, and complete APCO/NCIC certifications within set timelines.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Candidate must be free of felony or violent misdemeanor convictions.
• Hearing must be correctable to a range that allows normal radio and telephone conversations.
• Vision must be correctable to read computer terminals, maps, CCTV.
• Typing speed of at least 30 WPM with 90% accuracy.
• Extensive background check, psychological exam, and drug screen.
• Must be available to work all days/shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays.
• Within 90 days APCO Public Safety Telecommunicator course; recertification every 2 years.
• Within 180 days NCIC certification; recertification every 2 years.

Responsibilities

• Receives, processes, and transmits information for emergency and non-emergency calls for service using multiple communication systems.
• Monitors CCTV, alarm, door access, and panic alarm panels for police or security response situations.
• Operates a public safety radio console per FCC, CHRI, and MARRS guidelines.
• Dispatches appropriate law enforcement and security resources to calls within jurisdiction.
• Documents calls, and accesses NCIC, NLETS, KCJIS and other law enforcement data for official use.
• Maintains detailed logs and reports in accordance with policy.
• Provides external communications to university personnel, stakeholders, and campus community.
• Participates in internal or external training to improve performance.
• Maintains all department-issued equipment and certifications.
