Job summary

Harvard University requires a relief shuttle driver to operate on the Cambridge and Allston campuses, covering Sunday 12:00am–5:00am, Monday 12:00am–4:00am, and Thursday/Friday 6:45am–11:45am shifts. This is a relief, seasonal role with a 19-hour weekly schedule.

Must hold a Massachusetts state commercial driver’s license with Passenger & Air Brake endorsements, a high school diploma or equivalent, and 5+ years of driving experience.

Responsibilities

  • Operate transit vehicles for charters and extended services.
  • Communicate on two-way radio to receive instructions and confirm changes.
  • Perform daily safety inspections and vehicle condition reports.
  • Assist passengers with mobility impairments and assist boarding/alighting.

Job Description
Job Summary:

Operates shuttle bus, receives instructions from coordinator and responds to requests throughout Cambridge/Allston campuses. Normal hours of work will be Sunday 12AM-5AM, Monday 12AM-4AM, Thursday/Friday 6:45AM-11:45AM. Management will have the discretion to alter the work schedule day with a 48-hour notice to employee to cover for vacations/extended absences/open shifts/charters. This is a relief driver position.

Job-Specific Responsibilities:
  • Operates shuttle bus on designated routes on the Cambridge and Allston campuses.
  • Operates transit vehicles for charters and extended services.
  • Communicates on two-way radio with coordinator to receive instructions and confirm changes, additions, or deletions from route schedule.
  • Performs daily safety inspection of vehicle and equipment.Completes vehicle condition report which includes requests for maintenance and repair.
  • Performs refueling and electric recharging of vehicles as needed.
  • Assists passengers with mobility impairments both entering and exiting vehicle.
  • Performs related duties as required.
Working Conditions:

Will be required to wear a uniform provided by employer.

Physical Requirements:

Must be willing and able to perform physically demanding work outdoors in all types of weather conditions. The incumbent needs the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Required to sit for prolonged periods of time.

Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent and a valid Massachusetts state commercial driver’s license with “Passenger & Air Brake” endorsements with a minimum of five years driving experience required. Must have an excellent driving record. Three to five years of related passenger transport experience preferred. Must possess strong verbal communication skills, a clear speaking voice, and solid customer service skills, including: courtesy, flexibility, sensitivity, patience, and humor. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a customer-focused team environment required.

  • Compensation Range/Rate (including Shift Differential if applicable): $35.20 plus $2.35 shift differential

Work Format Details

This position has been determined by school or unit leaders that some of the duties and responsibilities can be effectively performed at a non-Harvard location. The work schedule and location will be set by the department at its discretion and based upon operational needs. When not working at a Harvard or Harvard-designated location, employees in hybrid positions must work in a Harvard registered state in compliance with the University’s Policy on Employment Outside of Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
