Job summary

Tri-County Council for the Lower Eastern Shore of Maryland is seeking a Dispatcher to serve as the primary communication link between bus operators, supervisors, maintenance staff and first responders. The position involves monitoring radio and phone lines, coordinating routes, and ensuring on-time departures and safety.

You will log vehicle status, respond to operator requests, handle schedule changes, and assist with incident reporting and shift handovers while maintaining professional

Responsibilities

  • Maintains radio/cell phone contact with bus operators during shift.
  • Answers incoming calls to provide customer service.
  • Transmits information to and from bus operators to support timely travel.
  • Assigns vehicles and maintains operator readiness with records and manifests.
  • Reviews driver manifests for accuracy.
  • Inspects operator appearance for professionalism and safety readiness.
  • Checks in vehicles and equipment returned by operators.
  • Maintains list of buses out of service and updates status.
  • Reviews pre- and post-trip inspections and notifies maintenance.
  • Prepares end-of-shift reports and dispatches repairs as needed.
  • Records schedule/route changes and communicates with operators.
  • Responds to operator requests and to police/fire/medical for emergencies.
  • Coordinates emergency responders and notifies supervisor of delays.
  • Prepares route assignments, sign-in/out sheets, manifests and fare sheets.
  • Ensures on-time departures, runs, and returns; reports delays.

Summary

Serves as primary communication link between bus operators and supervisors, maintenance technicians, and first responder/emergency services.

DISPATCHER $16/hr

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintains appropriate radio/cell phone contact with bus operators on the job at all times during shift.
  • Answers incoming phone calls to provide customer service.
  • Transmits information to and from bus operators to support timely and safe travel along defined routes.
  • Assigns vehicles and ensures bus operators are properly equipped to begin and end their routes by maintaining records of assigned vehicles, keys, inspection forms, manifests, etc.
  • Reviews all driver manifests for accuracy.
  • Inspects bus operator appearance at check‑in to ensure individual compliance with standards of professionalism (grooming, uniform, readiness and ability to safely operate vehicle), and promptly notifies supervisor of any issues; prevents visibly impaired bus operators from driving pending supervisor decision.
  • Checks‑in vehicles and all equipment issued to bus operators as they return at the end of shift.
  • Maintains a listing of buses out of service and removes them when they are placed back in service.
  • Reviews pre‑ and post‑trip inspection forms and notifies maintenance of needed repairs and/or maintenance.
  • Completes end‑of‑shift report and forwards it to maintenance with any repairs that are needed on the vehicles.
  • Records and notifies bus operators of schedule or route changes, special‑needs passengers, non‑standard stops, and other changes or events affecting the assigned routes.
  • Responds to bus operator requests for assistance from staff, and emergency assistance to police, fire, or ambulance personnel.
  • Communicates appropriately with bus operators and members of their chain of support; notifies supervisor of tardy or absent drivers and requests replacement.
  • Monitors radio communications and responds quickly to requests for assistance; coordinates emergency assistance responders within and outside of Shore Transit.
  • Prepares written incident/accident reports on all events occurring within assigned shift.
  • Prepares next shift bus assignment and sign‑in/out sheets, manifests and fare sheet.
  • Ensures buses depart, run, and return on time; notifies supervisors of any issues or delays that occur.
  • Maintains a variety of records, including sign‑in and out sheets, vehicle inspection reports, complaint forms, incident/accident reports, etc.
  • Assists Human Resources with distributing policy updates and collecting acknowledgement forms from bus operators.
  • Folds route schedules as needed, places schedules in correct locations.
  • Prints route schedules as needed.
  • Monitors security cameras to ensure safety of employees, customers, vendors, visitors, etc.
  • Responds to requests for gate access; allows only authorized individuals through the security gate.
  • Other job duties as assigned.
