Job summary

Dimensional Innovations in the Kansas City area seeks an Innovation Lab Intern to help prototype and test ideas for real client projects. You’ll turn concepts into physical mockups, collaborate with design, engineering, technology and fabrication teams, and explore new materials and workflows to improve experiences.

You’ll learn rapid prototyping, CAD tools, 3D printing, CNC fabrication and how to document results for broader team use. This onsite internship runs summer 2027 in Overland Park, KS.

Qualifications

• Strong hand sketching and drawing skills for communicating ideas and concepts.
• SolidWorks, Rhino, Fusion 360 or similar CAD tools experience.
• Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite.
• Interest in prototyping, making, digital fabrication and emerging technology.
• Experience with CAD/CAM, CNC equipment, 3D printing or other digital fabrication workflows is a plus.
• Interest in materials, construction methods and manufacturing processes.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to real DI client projects through prototyping, testing and problem-solving.
• Turn ideas into physical mockups and prototypes that help teams evaluate concepts.
• Participate in ideation and design conversations with teams across DI.
• Explore ways new materials, processes and technologies could solve design challenges.
• Use CAD and digital fabrication tools to take ideas from screen into physical prototypes.
• Experiment with 3D printing, CNC fabrication and other rapid prototyping methods.
• Document prototypes, experiments, findings and recommendations for teams.
• Collaborate across Design, Engineering, Technology, Fabrication and other disciplines.
