Synergy Search partners with a growing technology company to own project cost accounting and financial analysis, working with finance, programs, and operations to keep costs, forecasts, billing, and reporting aligned.

This individual contributor role offers autonomy, exposure to leadership, and requires 3–5 years in cost/project accounting, with solid US GAAP knowledge and advanced Excel/ERP skills. Washington, DC-based position.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
• 3–5 years of progressive cost/project accounting experience.
• Experience with government contracting or project-based cost accounting.
• ASC 606 / revenue recognition experience and strong ERP/Excel skills.

Responsibilities

• Maintain project cost accounting structures and related financial data in line with company policy
• Review labor, material, subcontract, and other project charges for accuracy and proper classification
• Reconcile project ledgers to the general ledger, investigating and resolving discrepancies
• Prepare journal entries, accruals, and other close activities with clear supporting documentation
• Develop and maintain estimates at completion and estimates to complete, incorporating actual costs, commitments, and forecast assumptions
• Analyze cost trends against budget and flag unfavorable movement early
• Support milestone-based billing and revenue recognition under US GAAP
• Prepare recurring financial reporting on cost, margin, billing, and risk for leadership
• Support internal and external audits, tracing figures to source records
• Identify opportunities to standardize and improve close processes

The business supports complex, project-based work and is investing in its accounting function to keep pace with that growth. This role owns project cost accounting and financial analysis, working closely with finance, program, and operations teams to keep costs, forecasts, billing, and reporting aligned and explainable. It's an individual contributor role with real autonomy, limited day-to-day direction, and direct exposure to leadership.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field
• At least 3 to 5 years of progressive experience in cost accounting, project accounting, or related financial analysis
• Experience with government contracting or project-based cost accounting
• Direct experience owning the ASC 606 / revenue recognition process
• Working knowledge of US GAAP and cost-to-completion methodologies
• Advanced Excel skills; ERP experience required
• Comfortable working independently with limited oversight
