Responsibilities

  • Lead the daily operations, implementation, and continued growth of multiple community-based programs focused on food access, fresh produce availability, and community organizing.
  • Supervise, coach, and develop an initial team of two Program Associates, with potential oversight of additional employees and contractors; establish performance goals, accountability measures, and professional development opportunities.
  • Develop, implement, and improve operational systems, program procedures, performance metrics, and reporting processes to strengthen efficiency and organizational effectiveness.
  • Manage program budgets, track expenditures, review expenses, and support grant administration, documentation, compliance, and reporting in collaboration with organizational leadership.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with community partners, neighborhood businesses, and residents while supporting program expansion, partner engagement, and community participation.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director, Development Manager, and organizational stakeholders on strategic initiatives, staffing, program planning, and operational priorities.

Job description

Scion Nonprofit Staffing has been engaged to conduct a search for an experienced Programs Manager on behalf of a mission-driven nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding access to nutritious food and strengthening community well-being in Oakland, CA. This is an exciting opportunity for a hands-on nonprofit leader to oversee multiple community-based programs, supervise and develop staff, strengthen operational systems, and support initiatives that increase food accessibility and community engagement. The ideal candidate brings demonstrated nonprofit program management experience, strong supervisory and operational leadership skills, and the ability to manage budgets, improve processes, and build meaningful community partnerships. This position is ideal for someone who thrives in a grassroots nonprofit environment and enjoys both leading people and directly contributing to program execution.

RESPONSIBILITIES

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Demonstrated experience managing and growing nonprofit programs, including 3–5 years of project management experience and the ability to oversee multiple initiatives, competing priorities, and deadlines.
  • 2–3 years of people management experience , including direct staff supervision, coaching, performance management, and employee development.
  • Strong experience managing program operations, budgets, expenditures, and performance reporting; experience supporting grant-funded programs and grant administration is preferred.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, problem-solving, and relationship-building skills, with a strong understanding of community-based work and a commitment to equity, inclusion, and community empowerment.
  • Strong technological proficiency and adaptability, including experience with digital reporting tools, CRM or ERP systems, Google Workspace, and other operational platforms.
  • Experience in food access, food justice, community health, SNAP programming, or grassroots organizing is preferred; Spanish or Arabic fluency is a plus.
COMPENSATION & SCHEDULE

This is a full-time, temporary-to-hire position based in Oakland, CA , offering $36.00–$41.00 per hour , depending on experience and qualifications. The position follows a hybrid schedule , with onsite work Monday through Wednesday and remote work Thursday and Friday. The standard workweek is approximately 40 hours, with working hours generally between 8:00 AM–5:00 PM or 9:00 AM–6:00 PM .
