Job summary

Shelter House is seeking an Assistant Director of Programs (ADP) to lead the Eleanor Kennedy Shelter’s day-to-day operations in Alexandria, VA. The ADP supervises case management and program staff, ensuring trauma-informed, housing-focused services and regulatory compliance.

You will collaborate with the Program Director to support program improvement, data reporting, and on-call leadership while guiding staff through complex client situations and service coordination.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in human services or related field.
• Minimum 3 years in homeless services, emergency shelter, or related settings.
• Minimum 3 years of supervisory or program leadership experience.
• Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

• Supervise direct service staff, including case managers and program staff.
• Provide leadership, coaching, and professional development through meetings and evaluations.
• Support staff in managing complex client situations and crisis interventions.
• Assist with staff scheduling, coverage planning, and on-call support.
• Oversee case management focused on housing stabilization and service planning.
• Ensure service delivery with dignity, cultural responsiveness, and client-centered approach.
• Maintain program documentation, reporting, and data entry accuracy.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in human services, social work, or related field

Master’s degree in Social Work or related field
