Job summary

Shelter House is seeking an Assistant Director of Programs (ADP) to support day-to-day operations at the Eleanor Kennedy Shelter in Alexandria, VA. The role provides leadership to direct service staff and ensures high-quality, trauma-informed, client-centered services with regulatory compliance.

The ADP will supervise case management, participate in program development, and serve as a key on-call leader for the shelter.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in human services, social work, or related field (or equivalent experience).
• At least 3 years of experience in homelessness services, emergency shelter, or related settings.
• At least 3 years of supervisory or program leadership experience.
• Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead and supervise direct service staff and program staff using trauma-informed, housing-focused approach.
• Provide leadership, coaching, and professional development through regular meetings and evaluations.
• Support staff in managing complex client situations and crisis interventions.
• Assist with staff scheduling, coverage planning, and on-call support as needed.
• Oversee case management focused on housing stabilization and service coordination.
• Ensure intake, assessment, and service coordination for shelter participants.
• Maintain compliant, accurate documentation and reporting.
