Job description

The Program Coordinator: Equipment, Training & Custom Adventures is a year-round position responsible for STARS’
adaptive equipment systems, staff training and technical development, and the development and delivery of STARS
Custom Adventures programming. This position serves as a technical resource across STARS programs, leading
equipment fittings, adaptations, maintenance coordination, staff training, and ongoing instructor development. This
position also leads the development and execution of STARS Custom Adventures, providing individualized adaptive
recreation experiences designed around the goals, interests, and abilities of individual participants or small groups.
During the summer season, this position serves as the second-in-command within program operations, working closely
with the Program Manager to support daily programming, staff leadership, participant needs, logistics, and field
operations. The position provides direct instruction and mentorship throughout the year and serves as a key bridge
between technical program development, equipment, training, and program delivery.

Duties and Responsibilities
Adaptive Equipment & Technical Operations
  • Lead participant equipment fittings for adaptive ski and snowboard programs.
  • Fit, adjust, modify, and adapt adaptive and conventional ski and snowboard equipment to meet individual participant needs.
  • Develop and implement equipment adaptations and modifications in collaboration with program leadership and instructors.
  • Maintain knowledge of adaptive ski and snowboard equipment, technologies, and best practices.
  • Monitor equipment condition, usage, and performance throughout the winter season.
  • Support the development and maintenance of equipment retirement schedules and replacement plans.
  • Identify equipment that requires repair, modification, replacement, or retirement and communicate recommendations to program leadership.
  • Maintain accurate equipment documentation and inventory in coordination with operations staff.
  • Serve as a technical resource for instructors and staff regarding equipment selection, setup, and troubleshooting.
  • Serve as a year-round technical resource for STARS programs, supporting equipment needs across winter, summer, and Custom Adventures programming.
Staff Training & Professional Development
  • Lead STARS’ internal training and continuing education program for instructors, volunteers, interns, and seasonal staff.
  • Develop and deliver technical training and adaptive ski and snowboard clinics.
  • Facilitate ongoing staff education throughout the winter season.
  • Provide hands‑on training in adaptive equipment, equipment fitting, modifications, and adaptive ski and snowboard techniques.
  • Support instructor development through observation, coaching, feedback, and skill progression.
  • Identify staff training needs and work with the Program Director to develop appropriate educational opportunities.
  • Support continuing education and professional development initiatives for winter staff.
  • Maintain and update training materials, resources, and technical procedures as program practices evolve.
  • Help establish consistent technical standards and practices across STARS programs.
Instruction & Technical Program Support
  • Provide direct adaptive instruction across STARS programs, including winter sports, summer recreation, and Custom Adventures.
  • Support instructor assignments and participant‑to‑instructor pairing when needed.
  • Conduct participant assessments and provide recommendations regarding equipment and instructional approach.
  • Model high‑quality adaptive instruction and serve as a technical resource for other instructors.
  • Support instructors and program staff with technical questions, adaptive approaches, and individualized participant needs across program areas.
Custom Adventures
  • Lead the development, launch, and ongoing growth of STARS Custom Adventures programming.
  • Develop individualized adaptive recreation experiences based on participant goals, interests, abilities, and desired outcomes.
  • Serve as the primary program lead for Custom Adventures operating out of STARS Basecamp.
  • Work with participants, families, caregivers, and referral partners to understand goals and develop appropriate individualized program experiences.
  • Develop program plans, schedules, equipment needs, staffing needs, and adaptive approaches for Custom Adventures.
  • Coordinate with the Program Director and Program Manager to ensure Custom Adventures align with STARS’ mission, capacity, safety standards, and operational priorities.
  • Provide direct instruction and technical leadership for Custom Adventures when appropriate.
  • Identify and coordinate appropriate recreation opportunities, locations, equipment, and community partners to support individualized programming.
  • Build and maintain a pipeline of Custom Adventures opportunities and identify opportunities to expand the program.
  • Document program plans, participant needs, equipment requirements, and relevant program information.
  • Evaluate Custom Adventures experiences and use lessons learned to improve programming and develop future opportunities.
  • Help establish consistent systems, standards, and best practices for individualized programming as the Custom Adventures program grows.
Program Operations & Summer Leadership
  • Serve as a key operational leader supporting the Program Manager across STARS programming.
  • During the summer season, serve as the second‑in‑command for program operations and provide leadership and support to seasonal staff and interns.
  • Support the Program Manager with daily program operations, staffing, logistics, participant needs, and field leadership.
  • Serve as Manager on Duty (MOD) when assigned.
  • Provide on‑site leadership and operational support when the Program Manager is unavailable or when additional leadership coverage is needed.
  • Support daily staff communication, morning meetings, program coordination, and troubleshooting.
  • Assist with participant assessments, equipment fittings, volunteer deployment, equipment logistics, and day‑of program needs.
  • Support the implementation of STARS safety procedures, risk management practices, and operational standards.
  • Help identify operational challenges and recommend improvements to the Program Manager and Program Director.
  • Provide mentorship and technical support to seasonal staff and interns throughout the summer season.
Intern & Staff Mentorship
  • Provide day‑to‑day mentorship and support to interns, seasonal staff, and emerging adaptive recreation professionals throughout the year.
  • Assist with teaching, coaching, and evaluating interns and staff in technical, instructional, and program delivery skills.
  • Model professional standards and expectations for seasonal staff and interns.
  • Support a positive, collaborative learning environment for emerging adaptive recreation professionals.
Special Olympics Support
  • Assist with Special Olympics practices, competitions, and related winter program logistics as assigned.
  • Support athletes and staff with equipment, instruction, and technical needs during Special Olympics programming.
Program Documentation & Continuous Improvement
  • Maintain appropriate equipment, training, and program documentation.
  • Provide feedback to program leadership regarding equipment needs, staff development, and program operations.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development and improvement of STARS’ winter adaptive recreation programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
