General Description

The Academic Center for Excellence ( ACE ) at SUNY Niagara is seeking a committed and knowledgeable Professional Writing Tutor to promote student success through specialized one-on-one writing support. This on-campus position involves working with students from all disciplines and academic levels at any stage of the writing process, with the goal of helping them develop the skills and confidence necessary to engage in academic writing communities.

The Professional Writing Tutor is expected to stay current in writing studies, writing center theory, and best practices in the field. Additional responsibilities may include developing targeted programming for specific student populations—such as conversation groups for English language learners, writing refreshers for returning students, and APA workshops for allied health majors.

In collaboration with English faculty, this position will support ENG 101 by observing a minimum of one course each semester and leading group tutoring hours as part of supplemental instruction.

The Professional Writing Tutor will also work with faculty across campus to assess student writing needs and contribute to new initiatives that strengthen ACE services. All work will be completed on-site during the Academic Center for Excellence’s open hours.

The rate of pay is based on the level of education the candidate possesses. For a Bachelor’s degree or lower the rate of pay will be $22.52 per hour. For a Master’s degree or higher the rate of pay will be $24.76 per hour.

Typical Work Activities
  • Provide one-on-one and group writing support to students at all academic levels and stages of the writing process, including leading group support hours as part of supplemental instruction
  • Help students understand assignments, develop action plans, and refine research questions or thesis statements
  • Support students in improving fluency, grammar, sentence structure, and vocabulary in written English
  • Guide students in using source material effectively, act as a center liaison for citation support, and assist with proper use of citation formats ( APA , MLA , Chicago)
  • Facilitate supplemental support for ENG 101, including participation in class sessions and group support hours
  • Review student writing and provide feedback that promotes critical thinking and independent revision
  • Collaborate with faculty and the ACE Coordinator to assess student needs and improve writing support services
  • Participate in staff training, meetings, and the development of writing-focused programming for specific student groups
  • Assist with data collection, student evaluations, and maintaining records in compliance with FERPA
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Coordinator of the Academic Center for Excellence

  • Ability to organize and manage time effectively, balancing multiple responsibilities and deadlines
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and ensure confidentiality in compliance with institutional policies (e.g., FERPA )
  • Ability to adapt instructional approaches to meet the varied learning styles and backgrounds of students
  • Ability to engage in continuous professional development and participate in team meetings
  • Ability to use relevant software and digital tools for tutoring, communication, and record keeping
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an institution accredited by the US Department of Education, or an internationally recognized institution.
  • Teaching, tutoring, and/or related professional experience in Writing Center, Composition, Writing Studies, or English Language field.
  • Ability to problem solve and work well under pressure.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively with a variety of constituents from diverse backgrounds.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Education, TESOL , Linguistics, Writing Studies, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of writing conventions for different disciplines.
  • TESOL coursework, degree, or certificate.
