Job description

The Professional Math Tutor provides high-quality academic support to students enrolled in mathematics courses ranging from developmental math through college-level mathematics. This position is responsible for facilitating conceptual understanding, strengthening problem-solving skills, and promoting student persistence and success in mathematics. This position works collaboratively with faculty, staff, and student tutors to provide high-quality tutoring services and contribute to a supportive learning environment.

SALARY: $24.77 per hour, not to exceed 19 hours per week.

Part-time positions are posted based on the possible availability of a future assignment which are sporadic and may not occur. Available positions are contingent upon enrollment and instructional needs of the College.

Academic Support Services
  • Provide one-on-one and small-group tutoring to students mathematics courses including, but not limited to: Basic Math / Developmental Math, Algebra, College Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Trigonometry.
  • Diagnose student learning gaps and adjust instructional approaches accordingly.
  • Explain mathematical concepts using multiple methods and real-world applications.
  • Guide students through structured problem-solving processes rather than providing answers.
  • Reinforce classroom instruction and support curriculum-aligned learning outcomes.
Student Success & Academic Coaching
  • Support students in developing effective study strategies for mathematics success.
  • Assist students in building confidence, persistence, and independent learning skills.
  • Help students prepare for quizzes, exams, placement tests, and course assessments.
  • Identify recurring academic barriers and recommend appropriate interventions or resources.
Collaboration and Student Success
  • Collaborate with faculty to identify student support needs and reinforce course learning outcomes.
  • Provide feedback on common student challenges and areas of instructional difficulty.
  • Refer students to appropriate campus resources, including academic advising, accessibility services, counseling services, and other student support programs.
  • Participate in retention and student success initiatives designed to improve academic performance and persistence.
Professional Responsibilities
  • Attend scheduled tutor training sessions.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information in accordance with institutional policies and applicable regulations.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and effective communication in all interactions with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Remain current on tutoring best practices, writing instruction methodologies, and educational technologies.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong conceptual and procedural knowledge of mathematics.
  • Ability to diagnose learning gaps and adapt instruction in real time.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Patience, professionalism, and strong student engagement skills.
  • Ability to motivate students and foster academic confidence.
  • Strong organizational skills for tracking student progress and documentation.
  1. Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Statistics, Engineering, or a closely related field from an accredited institution is required.
  2. Demonstrated mastery of college-level mathematics through coursework or equivalent experience relevant to the tutoring assignment.
  3. Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Available positions are contingent upon enrollment and the instructional needs of the College.

Applicants must travel at their own expense for interviews that are conducted in person.

Wallace Community College accepts applications for Part-time Professional Tutors on a continuous basis, to fill morning, afternoon, evening or weekend needs. However, it does not necessarily imply there are immediate openings.
