The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of commercial and institutional mechanical systems, a strong understanding of applicable New York City building and mechanical codes, and a proven ability to manage complex projects while maintaining quality, safety, budget, and schedule requirements.

Responsibilities

- Lead the planning, design, coordination, and execution of mechanical system upgrades, renovations, and capital improvement projects.

- Develop, prepare, and review engineering drawings, technical specifications, calculations, feasibility studies, and cost estimates.

- Assess HVAC, heating, cooling, ventilation, central plant, and other building mechanical systems for performance, reliability, energy efficiency, and maintainability.

- Manage project scope, budgets, schedules, procurement, change orders, and overall project delivery.

- Coordinate architects, consulting engineers, contractors, vendors, facility management teams, and regulatory agencies.

- Apply applicable New York City and New York State building codes, mechanical codes, local laws, ordinances, and permitting requirements.

- Support bidding, contractor selection, procurement, and technical and commercial proposal evaluations.

- Conduct site assessments and construction inspections; review submittals, shop drawings, requests for information (RFIs), and proposed change orders.

- Develop construction phasing plans and coordinate equipment shutdowns to minimize disruption to occupied facilities and ongoing building operations.

- Oversee construction progress, quality control, testing, commissioning, punch lists, turnover documentation, and project closeout.

- Provide engineering recommendations, evaluate project risks, resolve technical issues, and communicate project status to clients, stakeholders, and company leadership.

- Ensure projects are delivered in accordance with applicable codes, approved design documents, contractual requirements, and established quality and safety standards.

Required Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.

- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of New York.

- Minimum of six (6) years of progressively responsible mechanical engineering experience, including project management and construction coordination.

- Demonstrated experience managing mechanical engineering or building infrastructure projects from initial planning through completion.

- Strong working knowledge of NYC and New York State building and mechanical codes, applicable local laws, permitting, and regulatory approval processes.

- Extensive knowledge of commercial or institutional HVAC systems, boilers, chillers, pumps, piping, ventilation, controls, and central utility plants.

- Experience preparing and reviewing engineering documents, project budgets, schedules, contractor proposals, and construction-related documentation.

- Proven ability to manage multiple projects, coordinate diverse project teams, and resolve complex technical and operational issues.

- Excellent written and verbal communication, organizational, analytical, and leadership skills.

- Ability to travel to project sites throughout New York City and Long Island as required.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience delivering mechanical engineering projects in occupied commercial, institutional, university, healthcare, or other complex facilities.

- Experience with building automation systems (BAS/BMS), energy efficiency initiatives, decarbonization, and mechanical infrastructure modernization.

- Familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit, and project management software.

- Experience with commissioning, preventive maintenance strategies, equipment lifecycle planning, and capital improvement programs.

- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or comparable project management training.

- Experience coordinating with NYC and New York State agencies, utility providers, and other authorities having jurisdiction.

Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate is a technically strong, detail-oriented engineering professional who can balance hands-on engineering oversight with project management, contractor coordination, and client communication. The candidate must be comfortable making sound technical decisions, managing competing priorities, and delivering reliable, cost-effective mechanical infrastructure solutions.
