Overview
We are currently seeking a Production Supervisor to join our growing team at our downtown Madison plant location. Our ideal candidate will have existing leadership experience, manufacturing background and desire to help support and grow our third shift production team.
This position will be full time and 100% onsite at our Madison, WI facility.
Responsibilities
- Assign daily work to production staff and oversee related processes including order setup, assembly, production machinery operation, and shipping to maximize effectiveness of personnel available.
- Coordinate and communicate production hand offs with other shifts to ensure the continuation and completion of production schedule.
- Collaborate with team mates to assure an effective daily line-management process to minimize downtime and maximize overall cost effectiveness.
- Responsible for implementing a production plan to assure attainment volumes needed to meet customer demand.
- Assure all SOPs, quality standards, and checks are being conducted correctly, timely and effectively on a daily basis.
- Work closely with master scheduler to prepare operational schedules and coordinate manufacturing activities to ensure production meets on-time delivery and targeted attainment goals.
- Work closely with buyers and supply chain to ensure production is uninterrupted by part shortages.
- If scheduled work becomes interrupted for any reason, make swift and effective changes to minimize production impact and maximize effective use of material, equipment, and personnel.
- Monitor and work with Plant Manager and HR business partners to maintain appropriate labor staffing using manpower planning tools.
- Participate in interview and selection process for new production or general staff to support goals and objectives of the department.
- Assist in the development and implementation of robust training and onboarding procedures to assure new employees are assimilated effectively and efficiently.
- Assure employees are trained in safety awareness, hazard communication, personal protective equipment, fire and severe weather emergency procedures and other programs as required.
- Manage, motivate, and mentor staff to do their best work and grow into future leaders. Promote team cohesion. Get involved and act decisively in difficult employee situations.
- Conduct collaborative recurring departmental meetings to assure departmental alignment with corporate initiatives, current business objectives, current state-of-the-business and address any employee issues/concerns.
- Participate in, provide information for and coordinate company programs in such areas as employee relations, discipline, vacation schedules, job evaluation, employee performance appraisal, labor relations, and grievances.
- Enforce plant rules and engage in coaching and discipline processes consistently with other supervisors and union contract language.
- Operate in a way that supports the values of the company.
- Responsible for hitting financial targets for departmental variance and overhead spend.
- Assist in analyzing monthly financial statements for the department and identifying the primary drivers of labor/material variance and overhead spend.
- Assist in identifying and leading variance reduction projects in labor, materials and overhead to assure the department is hitting budgeted targets. This includes working cross functionally with engineering, finance, and plant management.
- Work collaboratively with cross functional team on monthly cycle count program and root cause analysis of variances. Must work cross functionally with 3rd party DC, Poynette and Westport teams, finance, and plant leadership to assure all processes are completed on-time and accurately.
- Assist in maintaining 5-year capacity, capital, and production road map.
- Review production and operating reports and resolve operational, manufacturing, and maintenance problems to ensure minimum costs and prevent operational delays.
- Enforce safety and work rules and company housekeeping standards.
- Work collaboratively with EHS team to ensure compliance with all quality, safety, and sanitation regulations.
- Investigate & thoroughly document all accidents and incidents. Take a pro-active approach to reduce all safety risks.
- Work closely with EHS manager and Engineering to perform root cause and correction action activities to drive continuous improvement around accident/incident reduction.
- Identify opportunities for improvement in safety, quality, process, product flow, visual management, 5S, material usage, information flow and drive to resolution/implementation.
- Responsible for continual improvement in overall departmental housekeeping and promotion of continuous improvement and 5S in all areas to help meet goals and objectives of the department.
- Review production costs and product quality; modify production and inventory control programs to maintain and enhance profitable operation of division.
- Responsible to be an active member of a cross-functional teams assembled to research, analyze, and implement improvements or complete a project.
- Work with Purchasing, Engineering, Sales, Marketing, and other departments to aid and implement cost reduction initiatives, new tooling and methods, work simplification, man-hour planning, incentive rates, scheduling, quality control, maintenance, and machine repair.
- Work collaboratively with the Production Manager and plant leadership in developing, implementing, and sustaining annual strategic plans.
- Work with Engineering to develop or revise standard operational and working practices and observe workers to ensure compliance with standards.
- Communicate effectively in all forms of communication, to all levels of the organization.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, Engineering, Supervisory Management, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 1-3 years of management/supervision experience in a manufacturing environment required.
- Demonstrated leadership ability.
- Previous experience in a union environment is a plus.
- Knowledge of and experience with integrated manufacturing systems.
- Strong computer and software skills.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to effectively present information and engage in problem solving with large groups and respond to questions from managers, customers, vendors, or other employees within the organization.
- Exceptional problem-solving ability.
- Strong sense of urgency.
