Job summary

Flex is hiring an SMT Process Engineer in Austin, TX to join our manufacturing team. You will focus on improving cost, quality, and delivery on SMT lines and will work closely with production and maintenance to ensure stable line performance.

The role reports to the Process Engineering Manager and requires 4–6 years of SMT process experience, IPC A610/J-STD-001 knowledge, and hands-on SMT equipment familiarity with ASM, DEK/MPM, BTU/Heller, Koh Young, and Nordson.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field (or equivalent experience).
• 4–6 years SMT process engineering experience.
• Tests runs and records (breakdown events, scrap, etc.) and charts/graphs for yield analysis.
• Knowledge of SMT equipment and IPC standards (IPC-A-610, J-STD-001).
• Lean Six Sigma or IPC certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Develop and optimize SMT processes including printing, placement, reflow, AOI/SPI.
• Troubleshoot defects and lead root cause and corrective action activities.
• Provide customer-facing experience and training to technicians on SMT processes.
• Support NPI builds, DFM reviews, and process validation.

Reporting to the Process Engineering Manager, the SMT Process Engineer is in charge for process-engineering capabilities focused on cost, quality and delivery improvements in order to hold up a manufacturing organization.

What a typical day looks like

• Develop and optimize SMT processes including printing, placement, reflow, AOI/SPI.
• Troubleshoot defects and lead root cause and corrective action activities.
• Customer facing experience and technicians training on SMT processe
• Support NPI builds, DFM reviews, and process validation.
• Maintain process documentation and establish process controls (SPC, DOE).
• Collaborate with production and maintenance teams to ensure stable line performance.
• Lead continuous improvement initiatives using Lean/6σ tools.

The experience we’re looking to add to our team

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field (or equivalent experience)
• 4–6 years SMT process engineering experience.
• Processes test runs and prepares records (breakdown events, scrap, etc.), charts, and graphs of results for presentation to engineering to identify yield problems or test new products.
• Knowledge of SMT equipment and IPC standards (IPC A 610, J STD 001).
• Strong analytical, problem solving, and communication skills.
• Experience with equipment such as ASM, DEK/MPM, BTU/Heller, Koh Young, Nordson.
• Lean Six Sigma or IPC certification preferred
