Job summary

Flex is seeking an SMT Process Engineer to join our Austin, TX team. The role focuses on cost, quality, and delivery improvements across SMT printing, placement, reflow, and inspection processes.

The incumbent will troubleshoot defects, perform root cause analysis, and drive corrective actions. This position supports NPI builds, process validation, and process documentation in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field.
• 4–6 years SMT process engineering experience.
• Knowledge of IPC A610 and J STD 001 standards.
• Experience with SMT equipment and process validation.
• Lean Six Sigma or IPC certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Develop and optimize SMT processes including printing, placement, reflow, AOI/SPI.
• Troubleshoot defects and lead root cause and corrective action activities.
• Customer facing experience and technicians training on SMT processes.
• Support NPI builds, DFM reviews, and process validation.
• Maintain process documentation and establish process controls (SPC, DOE).
• Collaborate with production and maintenance teams to ensure stable line performance.
• Lead continuous improvement initiatives using Lean/6σ tools.

Reporting to the Process Engineering Manager, the SMT Process Engineer is in charge for process‑engineering capabilities focused on cost, quality and delivery improvements in order to hold up a manufacturing organization.

SHIFT 3:00 PM–11:15 PM (10% shift diff)*

What a typical day looks like:

• Develop and optimize SMT processes including printing, placement, reflow, AOI/SPI.
• Troubleshoot defects and lead root cause and corrective action activities.
• Customer facing experience and technicians training on SMT processes.
• Support NPI builds, DFM reviews, and process validation.
• Maintain process documentation and establish process controls (SPC, DOE).
• Collaborate with production and maintenance teams to ensure stable line performance.
• Lead continuous improvement initiatives using Lean/6σ tools.

The experience we’re looking to add to our team:

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field (or equivalent experience).
• 4–6 years SMT process engineering experience.
• Processes test runs and prepares records (breakdown events, scrap, etc.), charts, and graphs of results for presentation to engineering to identify yield problems or test new products.
• Knowledge of SMT equipment and IPC standards (IPC A 610, J STD 001).
• Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills.
• Experience with equipment such as ASM, DEK/MPM, BTU/Heller, Koh Young, Nordson.
• Lean Six Sigma or IPC certification preferred.
