Job summary

Akron Children’s Hospital is seeking a PRN Lab Assistant to support various lab functions. The role includes ordering tests in the LIS, pre-analytic and analytic procedures, specimen handling, phlebotomy, and processing glassware.

The position requires attention to regulatory standards, basic biology/chemistry knowledge, and potential training in sterile processing. On-site, standard lab environment, flexible PRN hours.

Qualifications

• Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Knowledge of basic biology and chemistry preferred.
• Graduate of an approved medical assistant, EMT, or phlebotomy program preferred.

Responsibilities

• Reviews orders for tests in LIS and selects correct tests.
• Obtains, receives, and processes specimens prior to testing.
• Uses sterile techniques for specimen handling, accessioning and processing.
• Performs pre-analytical tasks per protocols.
• Performs analytical tasks per protocols.
• Prepares specimens for send-out testing when needed.
• Performs phlebotomy duties as required.
• Ensures compliance with regulatory and safety standards.
• Collects glassware and prepares it for use; delivers to labs as assigned.
• Collects specimens and slides for Histology Lab when needed.
• Other duties as required.
