Job Description - Principal Project Manager

Company Overview

Our client is a large utility with a rapidly growing energy services division. They assist their customers in completing infrastructure improvements to achieve sustainability goals.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION

The Principal Project Manager plans, directs, leads, and coordinates activities of large-scale projects to ensure goals and objectives are accomplished within prescribed time frames and budget. Responsible for completing projects on or under budget and on schedule. Leads project teams, develops subcontract and procurement documentation, and negotiates terms with assistance from senior personnel and legal counsel.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

  1. Manage and support aspects of project management including:
  • Review and approve shop drawings, submittals, and engineering calculations
  • Develop and process change orders
  • Respond to Requests for Information (RFIs)
  • Track project progress, scheduling, and invoicing
  • Financial planning, cost forecasting, and scheduling
  • Plan, direct, and coordinate project activities to meet goals within time and budget constraints.
  • Develop and review project schedules, cost estimates, bills of materials, budgets, scope of work, standards, and supplier quotes.
  • Supervise and tightly control project implementation.
  • Monitor and control projects to maintain high safety standards.
  • Manage all internal and external parties involved, ensuring professional project management from design through construction and close-out phases.
  • POSITION SPECIFICS

    • Bachelor's degree in engineering (electrical, mechanical) and 10+ years of related experience or equivalent.
    • Minimum OSHA 30 certification.
    • Experience managing high-volume, fast-paced projects with tactful leadership.
    • Experience with projects in State and Federal Government sectors.
    • Knowledge of construction law, contract terms, and enforcement.
    • Proficiency in project scheduling software such as MS Project and Primavera P6.
    • Experience supervising employees, conducting performance appraisals, and resolving personnel issues.
    • Expertise in financial and GAAP aspects of project management.
    • Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a vehicle.
    • Proficiency in English (reading, writing, speaking).
    • Understanding of engineering and construction documents and processes.
    • PMP credential preferred.
    • Strong cost estimating and budgeting skills.
    • Ability to review mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and architectural plans.
    • Knowledge of Distributed Generation and Micro-grid products such as Solar, CHP, Fuel Cell, Battery Storage, and CNG.
    • Willingness to travel for project management outside the regional office area, including extended periods.
