Job summary

General Motors is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead safety‑critical Body Controls software, guiding compliance across Occupant Protection, Position, Cabin Comfort, Lighting, and Secure Vehicle Access. You will design scalable embedded C/C++ software, mentor staff, and shape testing, benchmarking, and integration practices.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electronics & Communication, Electrical Engineering, or related degree.
  • 10+ years of experience in Embedded Software development and launching quality software into production.
  • Demonstrated successful technical track record leading software development teams in complex system environments.
  • Experience with safety critical development and testing in regulated environments (FDA, FAA, Automotive, Aerospace).
  • Experience with real-time operating systems or middleware.
  • Proficiency with C/C++.

Responsibilities

  • Define and lead software compliance strategy for new technology and highly complex features for Body Controls Platform development.
  • Define a compliance & technology roadmap.
  • Drive architecture standards, patterns, and principles, actively engaging with and leading third party standards initiatives.
  • Serve as subject matter expert on safety, regulation and compliance matters.
  • Establish a forward looking external posture on emerging trends and standards impacting Body Controls domains.
  • Work across orgs to ensure coherent joint architecture across the full stack.
  • Maintain alignment between senior leadership and engineering teams through executive communication.
  • Maintain high-quality bar in projects from the start and champion quality improvements by adopting better technical practices.
  • Work with other teams to ensure system level architecture and compliance strategies are implemented.
  • Initiate large projects with complex architecture, breaking into usable components.
  • Improve and deliver reliable software through requirements, CI, automated testing, issue tracking, and code reviews.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to Senior and Staff engineers.
