Principal Assembly Packaging Engineer (Optical)

Job Summary

The Principal Assembly Packaging Engineer will oversee optical package design and assembly activities across our product portfolio. This role includes supervising internal teams and external consultants, developing component and system-level packaging, designing automated test systems, and contributing to product testing and qualification processes.

Responsibilities
  • Design electrical and optical component-level packages for semi-automated assembly.
  • Create detailed CAD models of packaging solutions.
  • Conduct thermal analysis of package designs.
  • Identify and support new vendor qualification for packaging and assembly technologies.
  • Design system-level packages that meet environmental certifications (waterproofing, corrosion, EMI/EMC, etc.).
  • Ensure packages comply with industry standards, including automotive and military qualification standards.
  • Develop custom machinery for automated testing and assembly.
  • Establish optical subsystem build and qualification processes for manufacturing.
  • Recruit, supervise, and train mechanical design resources or external service providers.
Minimum Requirements
  • BSc or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or related field.
  • 10+ years in product mechanical design and 5+ years in assembly process development for optical products.
  • Hands-on experience in assembling, testing, and troubleshooting optical systems.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks and other CAD tools.
  • Knowledge of FEM thermal and mechanical analysis techniques.
  • Familiarity with statistical process control and tolerance analysis.
  • Excellent documentation skills, including dimensioning and tolerance standards.
  • Understanding of package-level reliability and stress testing requirements.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience in autonomous navigation applications.
  • Knowledge of automotive and military system qualification.
  • Background in Inertial Measurement Units and GPS receivers.
  • Self-motivated with a passion for learning new technologies.
