Job summary

Needham Public Schools is seeking a Special Education Instructional Assistant for a long-term sub position starting in early November through January/February for the 2026-2027 school year.

Under supervision, the assistant will support students with disabilities in classroom instruction and social-emotional goals, collaborating with teachers and coordinators to maximize inclusion and progress toward IEP objectives.

Qualifications

• Pursuit of a Bachelor’s degree in a related field or at least 2 years experience in a similar role.
• Ability to work with students with disabilities and implement instructional plans.
• Experience or willingness to use augmentative communication tools.

Responsibilities

• Assist students with special education needs to maximize inclusion and achieve IEP objectives.
• Work with students individually and in small groups to reinforce basic academic skills.
• Support strategies such as positive reinforcement, visual supports, and de-escalation.
• Prepare instructional materials and learning environment.
• Assist with classroom behavior management to maintain a safe, focused setting.
• Supervise non-instructional times like lunch and recess as needed.
• Assist with self-care tasks such as hand-washing and dressing routines.
