Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate the eligibility determination process from referral to facilitation of the team meeting.
  • Facilitate the OOD Team Meeting process and monitor OOD students in accordance with MA DESE requirements.
  • Collaborate with Principals, Curriculum Leaders/Coaches, District Administrators, and general education teachers in monitoring the progress of students with disabilities.
  • Coordinate and oversee the district Kindergarten Screening Process.
  • Assist in the hiring of department staff.
  • Schedule weekly coordination meetings with special education and related therapies staff at each elementary school.
  • Assist with the preparation of financial and programmatic reports required at the district, state, and federal levels as they relate to special education and related services.
  • Assist in the development of the yearly department budget including staffing needs, instructional materials and resources, and professional development needs.

Job description

The Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District is seeking a 1.0FTE Special Education Coordinator to assist the Director of Student Services and Building Principals with oversight of special education and related therapies services and programming, PreK through Grade 5.

Scope of Responsibility:

The Special Education Coordinator is an instructional leader that creates, implements, maintains, and enhances learning opportunities for students with disabilities and supports cohesion between special education and general education to ensure that the educational needs of students with disabilities are met and they are fully included and engaged in the classroom environment and life of the school. The Coordinator provides support to building principals in the evaluation of special education and related services staff. The Coordinator must have a working understanding and knowledge of state and federal special education laws and regulations, and the ability to articulate district responsibilities regarding special education compliance.

Additional Responsibilities:
PreK:
  • Liaison between Early Intervention Programs and district for children with disabilities turning 3. Attends transition planning meetings with EI for students turning 3.
  • Ensure the timely evaluation and eligibility determination of students turning 3.
  • Coordinate with the PreK Peer Coordinator for PreK screenings and Special Education Referrals.
  • Work collaboratively with the PreK team to determine appropriate programming for students turning 3 through age 5.
  • Work collaboratively with the PreK team to ensure the range of students' needs are being met.
K-5:
  • Facilitate the eligibility determination process from referral to facilitation of the team meeting.
  • Facilitate the OOD Team Meeting process and monitors OOD students in accordance with MA DESE requirements.
  • Collaborate with Principals, Curriculum Leaders/Coaches, District Administrators, and general education teachers in monitoring the progress of students with disabilities, including implementation of special education programs and services.
  • Coordinate and oversee the district Kindergarten Screening Process.
  • Assist in the hiring of department staff in accordance with district practices.
  • Schedule weekly coordination meetings with special education and related therapies staff at each elementary school.
  • Assist with the preparation of financial and programmatic reports required at the district, state, and federal levels as they relate to special education and related services.
  • Assist in the development of the yearly department budget including staffing needs, instructional materials and resources, and professional development needs.
  • Attend administrative staff meetings, building-based meetings, and other professional meetings, as appropriate.
  • Facilitate professional development, as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Student Services.
Qualifications:
  • MA DESE Administrator of Special Education licensure required or ability to become licensed within the first year of employment;
  • MA DESE Special Education licensure, or related field licensure, required;
  • Proven leadership abilities in school/program/department administration and oversight, special education program development and evaluation, and staff supervision and evaluation
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in education including special education or related therapies services, experience as a Special Education Team Chairperson/Facilitator, or equivalent educational experience

Reports to: Director of Student Services

Supervises: Supports principals with supervision and evaluation of Special Education Teachers and Related Services Providers.

Work Year: 204 days of which 184 will be worked when students and/or teachers are in session. 20 additional days include 5 days before teaching staff return and 5 days after the last day of the school year. 10 remaining days are determined in collaboration with the Director of Student Services and may include summer and school vacations based on the needs of the department.

Salary: Based on experience
