RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in the design, development, implementation, evaluation and oversight of special education programs, services, and practices at assigned schools and in assigned grade levels.
  • Analyze, evaluate and oversee performance of specialized programs, services and practices.
  • Monitor and evaluate school and/or staff compliance with laws, regulations, and district requirements.
  • Coordinate, manage, and chair team meetings in various schools or locations as necessary.
  • Oversee and manage the functioning of district-based special services staff by coordinating and leading staff meetings, and resolving program, service, and practice issues.
  • Serve as a resource for school-based administration to coordinate the delivery and supervision of special education services within each school building.
  • Observe and evaluate special services staff as assigned.
  • Coordinate and/or provide professional development to district-wide and/or school-based staff.
  • Maintain an up‑to‑date inventory of special education resources, e.g., materials, supplies, equipment, etc.
  • Assist in provision of orientation and in‑service training programs for school personnel.
  • Monitor para‑professional assignments and make recommendations for any changes.
  • Prepare and present information, analysis, recommendations, etc., for purposes of informing development of budget, programs, service models, practice models, or other initiatives of the Special Services Department.
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Superintendent of Schools or the Administrator of Special Education and Student Support Services.

REPORTS TO: Administrator of Special Education and Student Support Services

Salary and terms of employment will be commensurate with the Westfield Public Schools Unit B collective bargaining agreement. Salary placement will be based on the information as contained in the application as submitted.

Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Westfield School Committee policy on evaluation.

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possess a minimum of a Master’s Degree.
  • Current and valid Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education certification as an Administrator of Special Services.
  • Preference may be given to candidates possessing an advanced degree in an area of special needs.
  • 5 years' experience as a classroom teacher and/or strong background in special needs area is preferred.
  • Requirements as set forth under State laws and regulations.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Work is generally conducted within school buildings, and ability to travel across and throughout school buildings is necessary.
  • Position involves sitting and moving within an office or school, frequent use of hands for keyboards, telephones and other office equipment.
  • Regular attendance, on site, is an essential function of this job.
  • Physical requirements include light lifting up to 10 pounds, occasional lifting up to 25 pounds with some pulling and pushing or reaching above, generally of desk and file drawers.
  • At least 5 year(s) of relevant experience preferred.
  • Master degree preferred.
  • Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
