JOB SUMMARY:
Police Sergeant will perform routine shift supervisory duties in the Office of Public Safety & Security for the University, ensuring the safety and security of the University’s campus. The office is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This position is a confidential position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Must supervise personnel who are assigned to patrol roads, buildings, and grounds to provide protection against vandalism, burglary, arson, trespass and theft; and stands a fixed post to perform access control duties as outlined in the security plan.
- Supervise personnel who are assigned to dispatch information; relay instructions or questions to/from remote units; and questions callers to determine the location and seriousness of emergency and response needed through the use of remote radio and telephone switchboard.
- Supervise personnel who operate and maintain various types of communications, computerized alarm systems, monitoring, emergency equipment, and recording equipment; and conducts tests of intrusion detection equipment.
- Supervise personnel who answer and route all visitors to the University and responds to inquiries regarding security matters in a courteous and professional manner.
- Generates/reviews shift activity reports and prepares written reports, which may be submitted to prosecuting agencies and Student Affairs for possible suspension or expulsion.
- Conducts/coordinates preliminary investigations into criminal and administrative acts occurring on campus; counsel student offenders and advise proper university officials; and assist and cooperate with other law enforcement agencies as required.
- Maintain orderly control of large crowds and enforce safety regulations when assigned to special campus events (i.e., athletic events, dances, plays, etc.).
- Participates in programs related to public safety and security education.
- Establishes, maintains, and/or supports standards of personal conduct and discipline in accordance with the current policy approved by the Board of Trustees; and provides positive role model for students.
- Makes recommendations regarding security matters.
- All other relevant duties as assigned.
EDUCATION:- High School diploma or GED
- AA Degree in Criminal Justice or related field.
- Completion of applicable campus security officer/supervisor course(s) in an approved training program preferred.
EXPERIENCE:- Three plus years Supervisory experience
- Knowledge of Federal Communication Commission regulations governing the use of voice radio equipment.
- Knowledge of modern campus security practices.
QUALIFICATIONS:- Must communicate effectively with people from varied social, educational, and economic backgrounds.
- Must be able to work without constant supervision, make decisions, and have good judgement while performing under stress.
- Must be able to handle multiple tasks and projects and prioritize based on departmental functionality.
- Ability to properly operate and care for computerized dispatch system and voice radio equipment.
- Ability to learn appropriate computer functions.
- Ability to keep concise and accurate records and carry out verbal instructions.
- Ability to write complete and concise reports.
- Maintain emotional stability and physical condition necessary to perform related duties.
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
- Must have a high level of professional appearance and demeanor, wear a standard issue security uniform, and carry standard security equipment.
WORKING CONDITIONS:Work is primarily performed in a university campus environment and requires a flexible schedule including evening and weekend work. The employee is subject to outside environmental weather: no effective protection from weather.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Moderate lifting up to 20 pounds as frequently as needed to move objects; dexterity to write and manipulate computer keyboard and mouse; ability to hear and speak clearly; and body mobility to stoop, kneel, and bend and reach.
