The Lexington Police Department is hiring for the full-time non-exempt position of Sergeant. This is an opportunity for you to take on a leadership role, showcase your skills, and make a meaningful impact within our department and community.

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks:

  • Supervises a squad on an assigned shift;
  • Enforces laws, investigates criminal activity, ensures safety of the public;
  • Maintains records and files and prepares reports;
  • Supervises and participates in patrol, traffic or investigation assignments;
  • Oversees work of police officers, checks quality and quantity of work performed;
  • Conducts criminal investigations and stakeouts, makes arrests, and testifies in court;
  • Collects evidence, interviews witnesses, suspects and victims;
  • Secures and supervises crime scenes;
  • Ensures subordinates follow directives, rules and regulations;
  • Interrogates suspects, gathers evidence, conducts surveillance, and apprehends violators;
  • May deal with restricted and confidential information and material;
  • Evaluates work performance of subordinates;
  • Supervises and participates in the preparation of daily, special and periodic plans or reports;
  • Serves warrants, summons and citations;
  • Performs all duties of a Police Officer;
  • Acts as field training officer;
  • Performs other tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Police Department;
  • Thorough knowledge of modern police methods and procedures;
  • Thorough knowledge of police investigative techniques of identification;
  • Thorough knowledge of the geography of the City of Lexington and the location of important buildings;
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
  • Ability to assign, instruct and review the work of subordinates;
  • Ability to deal firmly and tactfully with subordinate employees and with the public;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and with the public;
  • Possession of physical agility and endurance;
  • Skill in the use of firearms and the operation of a motor vehicle.

Education and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable experience as a police officer, including some supervisory experience.

Special Requirements:

  • Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Must meet and maintain all department and State training and education requirements for position.

Physical Requirements:

This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping and feeling. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
