Job description

Correctional Officer and CDL Driver

Under the direct supervision of the sergeant, this role ensures the central bus terminal operation meets daily objectives, complies with agency policies, and maintains safety standards.

  1. Provides direction and instruction to inmates and correctional officers on discipline, safety, security, and rehabilitation.
  2. Instructs on the use of keys, firearms, chemical munitions, and restraining equipment as necessary. Counsels inmates when required.
  3. Monitors inmate movement within the terminal.
  4. Ensures the safe transport of inmates across various custody levels, including PCR, medical transfers, parole, and extradition routes for both males and females.
  5. Transports safekeepers (SK) and special management unit (SMU) inmates.
  6. Uses sound supervisory judgment during inmate transportation.
  7. This position also serves as a Richland CDL Driver.

Requirements:

  • Must successfully complete an eight-week SCDC basic training upon hire.
  • High school diploma and relevant experience; a bachelor's degree in a related field may substitute for experience.
  • Eighteen months of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work; a criminal justice degree may substitute for half of this experience.
  • Must be certified by the SCDC training academy and complete the basic supervisory course within six months of employment.
  • Must attain a CDL within six months.
