ACCEPTING CERTIFIED AND NON-CERTIFIED CANDIDATES
POSITION SUMMARY
The general responsibilities of a Police Officer for the Town of Smyrna include responding to calls for service, enforcing traffic and criminal laws, and operating police vehicles during routine patrols.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Engage in interpersonal communication with the public and co-workers, promoting a professional and courteous environment.
- Participate with colleagues and supervisors in advancing the department's goals and objectives.
- Analyze and organize information and evidence from traffic and criminal investigations for prosecution.
- Provide emergency services by responding safely and promptly to calls and assisting those in need.
- Protect the public, co-workers, and themselves from harm by following safety practices and reporting hazards.
- Handle the entire arrest procedure, including examining, handcuffing, conducting searches, and guarding arrestees.
- Exercise discretion in the use of deadly and non-deadly force.
- May be required to arraign defendants and testify in court.
- Conduct NCIC, DELJIS, and CAD inquiries and full traffic collision investigations.
- Enforce criminal and traffic laws of Delaware and Smyrna ordinances.
- Possess the physical ability to subdue attacking individuals.
- Work rotating shifts and adapt to irregular conditions.
- Write reports such as traffic, summonses, and arrest reports.
- Identify and report utility problems and road hazards.
- Assist motorists and perform traffic control.
- Utilize various equipment including police radios, firearms, and other tools.
- May instruct suspects, enforce court orders, respond to civil disputes, and testify in courts.
- Prepare warrants, collect evidence, and inventory stolen property.
- Engage in physical altercations if necessary and perform physical activities during shifts.
- Maintain logs, prepare reports, and inspect equipment regularly.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of laws, regulations, and departmental procedures.
- Understanding of court decisions.
- Skillful in firearms and non-lethal weapons use.
- Ability to drive in various conditions.
- Strong communication skills, stress management, and situational judgment.
EDUCATION/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or G.E.D., with proof of graduation.
- Minimum age of 21, U.S. citizenship.
- Normal hearing and vision corrected to 20/20.
- Color discrimination ability.
- Proportionate height and weight.
- Successful completion of physical agility and written tests.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, AND CERTIFICATES
- Valid driver's license with at least one year driving experience.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Background check, psychological, and health evaluations.
- Residency within 45 minutes of Smyrna or commitment to move.
- No recent illegal drug use or felony convictions.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
Starting Salary: $61,049.73 to $72,030.86 for certified officers; $58,826.63 for recruits.
Post-training salary: $61,049.73.
