Collett Mechanical, Inc. is a union mechanical contractor based in Latham, NY, a suburb of Albany, with convenient access to major transportation routes including the New York State Thruway, Albany International Airport, and the Rensselaer Amtrak Station. The company specializes in the installation of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and plumbing systems for commercial and industrial projects. Typical projects include educational facilities, campus housing, medical office buildings, nanotechnology-related facilities, and hotels and hospitality properties. Collett Mechanical, Inc. performs both plan-and-spec competitive bid work and design/build projects. The firm serves clients throughout the Hudson Valley region of upstate New York, from Saratoga County to Sullivan County.

Role Description

The Plumbing & Mechanical Estimator is a full-time, on-site role based in Latham, NY. This position is responsible for reviewing plans and specifications, performing detailed quantity takeoffs for plumbing, HVAC, and mechanical systems, and preparing accurate cost estimates and proposals for commercial and industrial projects. Day-to-day tasks include analyzing bid documents, coordinating with project managers and field supervisors, soliciting and evaluating vendor and subcontractor quotes, and updating cost databases and historical pricing information. The estimator collaborates with the design/build team to develop value-engineered solutions, supports pre-construction planning, and participates in bid reviews and negotiations. The role also involves maintaining organized documentation, meeting bid deadlines, and contributing to continuous improvement of estimating processes.

Qualifications
  • Strong knowledge of plumbing systems and components, including pipe materials and installation methods.
  • Experience with maintenance and repair practices, as well as general mechanical maintenance in commercial or industrial settings.
  • Ability to provide professional customer service, with clear communication and responsive follow-up to clients, vendors, and team members.
  • Experience in mechanical or plumbing estimating, including blueprint reading, quantity takeoffs, and cost analysis.
  • Familiarity with estimating software and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook); ability to learn new tools as needed.
  • Strong analytical, mathematical, and organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy under bid deadlines.
  • Knowledge of relevant building codes, standards, and industry practices for plumbing and mechanical systems is preferred.
  • Prior experience in union mechanical contracting or commercial construction is a plus.
  • Associate or bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
