Job summary

Dowling Corporation is seeking a Plumbing Estimator to prepare accurate estimates for installation, replacement, service and project work. You will review plans, specs, scope of work, labor, materials, and conditions to develop detailed project estimates.

You will coordinate with the Plumbing Department, project managers, vendors and customers to ensure estimates align with requirements and timelines, supporting handoff to field teams and clear customer communication.

Job Title: Plumbing Estimator

Position Summary

The Plumbing Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive estimates and proposals for plumbing installation, replacement, service, and project work. This role reviews plans, specifications, scope of work, labor requirements, materials, equipment, and project conditions to develop detailed project estimates.

The Plumbing Estimator works closely with the Plumbing Department, project managers, field personnel, vendors, subcontractors, customers, and other team members to ensure estimates are complete, accurate, and aligned with project requirements. This position supports the transition of awarded work from estimating to the field and helps ensure customer expectations, project scope, pricing, and timelines are clearly communicated.

Key Responsibilities

• Review plans, specifications, drawings, and scope of work for plumbing projects
• Prepare detailed estimates for labor, materials, equipment, subcontractors, and other project costs
• Perform quantity takeoffs and determine required plumbing materials and equipment
• Obtain and compare pricing from vendors and subcontractors
• Develop accurate and competitive project proposals and quotes
• Identify project requirements, exclusions, potential risks, and areas requiring clarification
• Coordinate with the Plumbing Department to confirm labor requirements, installation methods, and project conditions
• Work with vendors to obtain material pricing, availability, and lead times
• Review bid documents and communicate questions or discrepancies before submitting estimates
• Maintain organized records of estimates, quotes, vendor pricing, and supporting documentation
• Enter and maintain estimate information in company systems
• Assist with revisions, change orders, and updated project pricing as needed
• Communicate with customers, general contractors, vendors, and internal team members regarding project scope and pricing
• Participate in pre-bid meetings, site visits, and project walkthroughs as needed
• Provide a complete and detailed handoff of awarded projects to the Plumbing Department and field team
• Communicate project scope, customer expectations, and timelines to appropriate team members
• Maintain awareness of current material costs, labor requirements, plumbing practices, and applicable codes
• Meet established deadlines for estimates and proposals
• Support other estimating and Plumbing Department needs as assigned

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required
• Plumbing, construction, or mechanical estimating experience preferred
• Knowledge of commercial and/or residential plumbing systems preferred
• Ability to read and interpret construction plans, drawings, and specifications
• Strong understanding of plumbing materials, labor requirements, and project scope
• Strong mathematical and analytical skills
• Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
• Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and computer-based estimating or project management systems
• Valid driver's license with clean driving record

Preferred Skills

• Experience estimating commercial and/or residential plumbing projects
• Knowledge of plumbing systems, piping, fixtures, equipment, and installation methods
• Familiarity with construction plans, specifications, and bid documents
• Knowledge of applicable plumbing codes and industry standards
• Experience with construction estimating software preferred
• Understanding of prevailing material and labor costs
• Ability to identify potential project risks and scope gaps
• Strong vendor and subcontractor communication skills
• Previous field experience in plumbing, construction, or mechanical trades preferred

Work Environment

• Primarily office-based with regular interaction with the Plumbing Department, vendors, customers, contractors, and field personnel
• Occasional travel to construction sites, project locations, and pre-bid meetings
• Combination of computer work, plan review, estimating, and project coordination
• May require visits to active construction sites
• Exposure to construction environments, mechanical equipment, and varying weather conditions during site visits
• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required when working in hazardous environments

Education & Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent required
• Post-secondary education in plumbing, construction, engineering, business, or a related field is beneficial
• Plumbing estimating, field, service, installation, or project management experience preferred
• Training or experience in estimating, customer service, project management, or construction is beneficial
• Ongoing training in plumbing systems, codes, estimating practices, and industry standards is expected
