Job summary

North in New York is seeking an experienced Platform Engineering leader to own the entire platform layer, working with the VP of Engineering to scale the team and shape its structure. You will directly manage engineers and focus on delivering reliable, well-designed platforms.

You will drive technical depth, push for continuous improvement, and collaborate with product teams to ensure platform work aligns with business needs.

Qualifications

• 10+ years in software engineering, including 5+ years managing engineers and leading multiple teams.
• Deep hands-on experience in backend, infrastructure, or data systems.
• Clear point of view on platform engineering for standardization, self-service and guardrails.
• Track record of building teams that hit commitments without heroics.
• Experience running on-call and incident response, improving reliability.
• Strong writing and communication with stakeholders inside/outside engineering.
• Comfort with ambiguity in a growing company and bias toward simple, durable solutions.
• Pragmatic views on how AI coding tools change engineering practice.

Responsibilities

• Lead and grow the Platform Engineering team through regular 1:1s, expectations, feedback and career development.
• Collaborate with VP of Engineering on growing Platform Engineering from a team into an organization and hire managers.
• Treat the platform as a product for North's engineers; build reusable patterns and self-service tooling with guardrails.
• Turn recurring incidents and drift into platform improvements across services.
• Hire for platform teams and help engineers ramp up quickly.
• Turn charters into actionable plans and raise risks early.
• Ensure work starts from clear specs and that teams operate what they ship.
• Strengthen reliability practices, including on-call and observability.
• Coordinate with product and customer-facing teams to align with customer needs.
• Balance long-term platform investments with near-term product needs and communicate tradeoffs.
