Job summary

Qualifications

Candidates who are pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements

• United States citizenship. Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens, in accordance with VA policy.
• Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine.
• Degree obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year of graduation.
• Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory or Commonwealth, or in the District of Columbia.
• Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program in Dermatology leading to eligibility for board certification.
• Residency Options:
  • Approved residency in an ACGME or AOA program.
  • One year of post‑medical‑school training (internship or transitional year) followed by two years of independent practice.
  • Non‑U.S. residency program followed by a minimum of three years of independent practice in the U.S., with verified practice related to the position.
• Residents in accredited training programs who meet basic requirements are eligible as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs). PRPs must hold a full, unrestricted license, may be appointed on an intermittent basis, and perform duties under supervision.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Preferred: Board certified in Dermatology.

• Physical requirements: Pass a pre‑employment physical examination as per VA Handbook 5019. Must be capable of moderate lifting up to 44 lbs, frequent reaching, use of fingers and hands, up to 8 hours of walking and standing, and hearing quiet voices.

Duties

• Eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan repayment program. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements and submit an application within four months of appointment.
• VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package, including a competitive salary, performance bonus, regular salary increases, 50‑55 days paid time off per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays, and up to 5 days paid absence for CME), traditional federal pension (5‑year vesting), 401(k) with up to 5% VA contribution, and federal insurance programs (health, vision, dental, term life, long‑term care).
• Physician contracts are non‑exclusive with no restriction on moonlighting and no employment contract.
• Clinical duties include:
  • Aspiration – incision and drainage of cutaneous abscesses and lesions.
  • Collection – reading and interpretation of KOH, Tzanck smears, gram stains, hair and mite preparations.
  • Cryosurgery of benign, premalignant, and malignant skin lesions.
  • Debridement and destruction of skin lesions by chemical (topical chemotherapy) and surgical means (curettage, electrosurgery).
  • Excision of benign and malignant lesions – simple and complex, including flaps and grafts.
  • Injections – dermal, subcutaneous, intramuscular, IV, and intralesional medication injections.
  • Patch testing (photopatch) and nail procedures.
  • Skin biopsies – shaves, punches, incisional, and excisional.
  • Ultraviolet light treatment (phototherapy).
  • Teledermatology and other telehealth modalities.
• Work schedule: Monday–Friday 7:30 am–4:00 pm. The incumbent may be required to work additional shifts on a permanent or temporary basis based on facility and patient care needs.
